Road trip & self-drive tour

The coastal road of Norway that disappears into the fjords. The American West from Las Vegas to the canyons of Utah. The Icelandic ring in a week. The road trip is not done: it is felt at the wheel, at every turn.

Complete guide

Why the road trip is a special format

A road trip is not a classic tour with a bus and a guide. It's the freedom to stop when the landscape requires it, to change your route if a side road seems promising, to drive two hours longer to arrive before sunset. It's not the journey that goes fast. It's the one that leaves room for the unexpected.

This format is particularly suitable for travelers who want to control their pace without managing all the logistics: pre-booked accommodations, car or motorhome ready for arrival, indicative itinerary with alternatives.

The world's great roads

Iceland: the ring (Route 1) circles the island in about 1,300 km. Waterfalls, volcanoes, geysers, northern lights depending on the season. 7 to 10 days for the whole, a few days for the south and west zones. The American West: Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon. A mythical road trip of 10 to 15 days with landscapes that change every two hours. Norway: the fjords of Bergen, Lofoten, the Troll Route. New Zealand: North Island and South Island, Tolkien landscapes, spectacular coastal roads. Namibia: Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Etosha, Fish River Canyon. Desert, wildlife and gravel roads.

What the organized brings to the road trip

An "organized" road trip is not a contradiction. This means: accommodations booked along the route (often difficult in high season in Iceland or the Grand Canyon), car adapted to the terrain (4x4 recommended in Iceland and Namibia), full insurance coverage, and day-by-day itinerary with alternatives depending on the weather.

This leaves all the freedom behind the wheel without the stress of looking for accommodation when arriving in a remote village on a Saturday night in August.

How to choose your road trip

Driving level required. Iceland in winter requires experience on slippery roads. Namibia on gravel tracks requires a 4x4 and special attention. The American West is passable with any vehicle on the main roads.

Ideal duration. The Grand Canyon alone deserves 4 days. The complete Icelandic ring, 7 to 10 days. Lofoten in Norway, minimum 5 days to enjoy the lights. Don't underestimate the distances: driving 3 hours a day is a reasonable average to enjoy the landscape.

Season. The timing changes everything: Iceland in winter offers the Northern Lights and snowy landscapes but imposes weather constraints. Summer ensures clear roads and 20 hours of light. The American West is passable all year round but the canyon temperatures in July easily exceed 40°C.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a 4x4 for a road trip in Iceland?

On Route 1 (main ring), a normal car is sufficient in summer. For F (Highlands) roads, 4x4s are mandatory and some are forbidden to 2WD vehicles. In winter, a 4x4 is strongly recommended everywhere. Snow and sand insurance should be checked.

Can you go on a road trip in Iceland in winter?

Yes, but with preparation. The full ring is difficult between December and February because of the snow and the very short days. On the other hand, the south and west (waterfalls, geysers, northern lights) are accessible all year round. The Icelandic winter is one of the most unique experiences for those who are prepared for the conditions.

How much time should you plan for the American West on a road trip?

10 to 15 days for the classic tour (Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon). 7 days is doable but very busy. Beyond 15 days, you can add the Arches (Moab), Death Valley or go down to California and Joshua Tree.

How do I book accommodation on a popular road trip?

In high season (July-August in Iceland, spring-autumn in US parks), booking 6 to 12 months in advance is essential for accommodation close to must-see sites. In American national parks, some campsites reserve 6 months per minute of opening. An operator who manages it changes everything.

Is Namibia hard for a road trip?

The main roads are passable in 2WD. But Sossusvlei, Fish River Canyon and some areas of Kaokoland require a 4x4 and track experience. Namibia is well suited to a self-drive tour for travelers who are comfortable driving, with good distances to be expected each day.

Can you go on a family road trip with children?

It is one of the best family formats. The American West (national parks with marked trails) and New Zealand are particularly suitable. Iceland is well suited for children aged 8 and over. The flexibility of the road trip allows you to adapt the pace to children without group constraints.
