Practical advice
Formalities and visa
French nationals do not need a visa for a stay of up to 60 days (exemption in force since 2024). A reduction to 30 days is announced by Bangkok: check the status of this measure before departure on the French diplomacy website. The TDAC digital arrival card has been mandatory since May 2025 and must be completed online before boarding. Passport valid for 6 months after the recommended date of entry.
Health and vaccines
No vaccinations are required to enter Thailand. The recommended vaccinations for a classic tour are: up-to-date DTP, hepatitis A, typhoid depending on the conditions of stay. Japanese encephalitis is recommended for prolonged stays in rural areas during the monsoon. Consult a doctor or an international vaccination center at least 4 to 6 weeks before departure.
Getting around
Transfers between cities are included in the organized tours. For independents, trains (State Railway of Thailand) connect Bangkok to Chiang Mai in 12 hours (comfortable night). Long-distance VIP buses cover the entire country for a modest budget. Domestic flights (Bangkok Air, Thai Lion Air) save time on long distances.
Culture and uses
Thailand is a country with a Buddhist culture: clothing covering shoulders and knees is mandatory to enter temples (sarong available at the entrance). Remove your shoes before entering a temple or house. Never point the head of a Buddha with your foot. The king and the royal family are sacred: any public criticism is a criminal offense. Thai politeness (wai, greeting with folded hands) is always appreciated. Smiling is the universal currency in Thailand.
Security
Absolutely avoid the southern provinces (Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Songkhla) which are formally advised against by the Quai d'Orsay. The tourist areas of the northern circuit (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya, Krabi) are accessible under normal vigilance. Thailand has tightened its cannabis legislation in 2025-2026: transport, purchase and consumption are subject to sentences of 2 to 10 years in prison.
