Why New Zealand

There are countries that apologize for being beautiful. New Zealand, however, does not apologize for it. In 17,000 kilometers of coastline, two main islands and unparalleled biodiversity, Aotearoa concentrates the most spectacular that the planet has produced: fjords carved out of living rock, active volcanoes spewing their fumaroles on the shores of turquoise lakes, glaciers that descend to temperate forests. All this at 22 hours from Paris, accessible by rental car or motorhome on roads that seem to be designed for photographers.

But New Zealand is not just a setting. Maori culture, one of the most vibrant in the Pacific, colours every aspect of the journey: place names in te reo Maori resonate like poems, haka electrify welcoming ceremonies, hāngi (cooked underground) feasts tell the story of a relationship to the land that predates the arrival of Europeans by centuries. To travel here is to understand how two peoples build together, laboriously but sincerely, a bicultural identity that is unique in the world.

Adventure, finally, is a national philosophy here. Queenstown invented commercial bungee jumping; New Zealanders popularized jet-boating and white-water rafting. Great Walks like the Milford Track are some of the most beautiful in the world. Even the sport-hating traveler ends up on a kayak paddling to a waterfall in Milford Sound, stunned by what he sees.

When to go

New Zealand follows the Southern Hemisphere calendar: summer lasts from November to March, winter from June to August. The best time for a full tour (two islands, hiking, Fiordland) isNovember to March, with a peak in January-February (Australian and New Zealand school holidays). March and November are the golden months: stable weather, reasonable crowds, milder prices.

The austral winter (June-August) has its own magic: Queenstown transforms into the capital of alpine skiing, Matariki (the Maori New Year, a national holiday) lights up July, and accommodation rates are at their lowest. But Milford Sound can be covered in persistent clouds, and alpine hiking is not recommended without mountain equipment.

Temperatures are moderate all year round in Auckland (between 9°C and 24°C), but the South Island is cooler and weather conditions change quickly at altitude: plan for layers, even in summer.

How much does it cost

New Zealand is a premium destination, comparable in cost to Scandinavia or Canada. BudgetEUR 70 to 130 per person per dayAll inclusive (accommodation, meals, travel, activities). In backpacker mode with hostels and home cooking, you can go down to 70 EUR. A comfortable trip in 3-4 star accommodation is more like 130 to 180 EUR per day.

Car or campervan rental is almost unavoidable: expect to pay €40-70 per day for a car, €80-€120 for a small campervan (sometimes saving on accommodation). Adventure activities in Queenstown are expensive: bungee jumping at the Kawarau Bridge costs around NZD 175 (EUR 90), a helicopter flight over the fjords around EUR 300.

Round-trip flights from Paris to Auckland cost between EUR 900 in the low season and EUR 2,200 in the high season (January-February). Ideally, book 4-6 months in advance.

Where to go

New Zealand is naturally divided into two islands that are connected by a ferry crossing (3h30, Wellington-Picton).The North Islandconcentrates Maori culture (Rotorua), the capital Wellington and the human warmth of the big cities. The South Islandoffers the most dramatic landscapes: Fiordland, the Southern Alps, the vineyards of Central Otago, the plains of Canterbury.

Most tours start atAuckland, enter the South Island throughChristchurchand end atQueenstown(or vice versa). The north-south road trip allows you to see the North Island without rushing, take the ferry and explore the south at your own pace.

Perched between two ports, New Zealand's largest city plays the gateway with aplomb. The Sky Tower overlooks a panorama of extinct volcanoes and turquoise bays, while the markets of Ponsonby and Viaduct Harbour set the pace for laid-back city life. Travelling by ferry to Waiheke Island for its vineyards and beaches is the perfect way to start the journey.

Rotorua

2 days

The air smells of sulphur and the earth breathes here: Rotorua is the geothermal heart of New Zealand. Spouting geysers, bubbling mud pools and acid-hued lakes create a sci-fi landscape. The city is also the country's Maori cultural capital: haka, hāngi (underground oven feast) and marae wood carvings are learned here in a lively, not museumified way.

The capital is a surprise: compact, windy and fiercely creative. The Te Papa Tongarewa Museum, one of the best museums in the Pacific, tells the story of the country's bicultural history. The Cable Car climbs up to a lookout over the bay, and Cuba Street is home to specialty cafes, independent bookstores and galleries. Wellington is also the home of Peter Jackson: the Weta Workshop studios are twenty minutes from the center.

The garden city is being boldly rebuilt after the earthquakes of 2010-2011: bold contemporary architecture, containers converted into bars and restaurants, a cardboard and wooden cathedral by Shigeru Ban. The Avon River flows through a peaceful urban park, and the century-old botanical gardens are among the most beautiful in Oceania. A natural gateway to the South Island, Christchurch is also the base to the plains of Canterbury and Aoraki.

The adventure capital of the world fully deserves its title: bungee jumping over the Shotover Gorge, skiing on the legendary slopes of the Remarkables, jet-boating on the Shotover River. Nestled between Lake Wakatipu and the mountains with jagged peaks, the city also knows how to combine adrenaline and lifestyle: its lakefront restaurants and Central Otago wine bars make it one of the most surprising restaurants in the country.

Te Anau is just a quiet village, but it is the gateway to Fiordland, one of the wildest national parks on the planet. From here, the road to Milford Sound crosses 120 km of virgin forests, hanging glaciers and mirrors of black water. The Milford Track, classified as one of the most beautiful hikes in the world, can be covered in 4 days in absolute silence. The immensity imposes itself here with a force that you will not forget.

North of Auckland, 144 tropical islands dot a bay with turquoise waters that the Maori have named Pewhairangi. It was here, in Waitangi, that the founding treaty of the New Zealand nation was signed in 1840 between the British Crown and the Maori chiefs. The Bay of Islands is now a paradise for sailing, diving and dolphin watching, with a relaxed summer atmosphere in contrast to the more intense tours of the South.

Practical advice

Formalities

French nationals do not need a traditional visa but must obtain aNZeTA(New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before leaving, valid for 2 years for stays up to 90 days. Total cost: approximately 60 EUR (NZeTA + IVL tourist tax). To be requested on immigration.govt.nz or via the official app. An NZTD declaration is also required before arrival. The passport must be valid for the entire duration of the stay (3 months validity beyond recommended for the entire stay).

TheBiosecurity checks on arrival are strict: Do not declare anything of plant or animal origin (food, hiking boots with soil, camping equipment). Fines are high and controls are rigorous. Clean your shoes before leaving.

Getting around

TheRental caris the key to the country. Drive on the left, the roads are generally well maintained, but the distances are misleading (maps seem small, but passes and winding roads multiply travel times). Do not plan more than 3 to 4 hours of driving per day to enjoy the scenery. GPS or offline Maps.me app is a must as some rural areas do not have a network.

TheMotorhome(campervan) is a very popular option: many DOC (Department of Conservation) campsites offer pitches between 8 and 20 NZD per night in beautiful natural sites. There is total freedom but wild camping outside the designated areas is regulated.

The ferry crossingInterislander or Bluebridgebetween Wellington and Picton (South Island) takes about 3h30. Book in advance in high season, especially with a vehicle.

Culture and uses

TheMaori culturepermeates New Zealand daily life far beyond tourist folklore. Learning a few words in te reo Maori (kia ora = hello/thank you, Ka kite = goodbye) is always appreciated. Thehakais not just a battle cry: it is a form of expression of identity, sadness, joy. Attending a welcoming ceremony (pōwhiri) in a marae is a profound experience if you are invited to do so.

New Zealand is a relaxed and straightforward society. TheGratuityis not mandatory but 10% in restaurants is welcome. Meal time is early: dinners are often taken at 6-7 p.m., restaurants close early outside the big cities. TheOutdoor activitiesare highly regulated but require appropriate insurance: check that your contract covers extreme sports before leaving.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a visa to go to New Zealand when you are French?

The French do not need a traditional visa to visit New Zealand for up to 90 days. On the other hand, the NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) is mandatory before departure. This electronic authorization costs about 17 NZD via the mobile app or 23 NZD online, plus the IVL tourist tax of 100 NZD (about 60 EUR in total). The NZeTA is valid for 2 years and can be obtained in a few days on immigration.govt.nz. An NZTD declaration must also be completed before arrival.

When is the best time to visit New Zealand?

The best time is the austral summer, from November to March: mild temperatures in Auckland (17-24°C), long days, all outdoor activities accessible. November and March offer the best value for money (less crowds than January-February). If you want to ski in Queenstown, opt for July-August. The austral winter (June-August) is mild at low altitudes but alpine hiking is not recommended without specialized equipment.

What is the Milford Track and how do I book it?

The Milford Track is considered one of the most beautiful hikes in the world: 54 km in 4 days through Fiordland, between Te Anau and Milford Sound. Places are limited and in high demand: you have to book several months in advance on the New Zealand DOC (Department of Conservation) website. The trek takes place between October and April (closed the rest of the year). Count about 120 NZD per night in a refuge.

Kids love Rotorua (geysers, bubbling mud), Hobbiton (Lord of the Rings settings) and the accessible hikes of Fiordland. Campervans are very popular for family travel. Avoid extreme sports for younger children and check the minimum ages of the activities.
