Practical advice
Formalities and documents
Norway is part of the Schengen area. French nationals enter without a visa, with a valid passport or national identity card. Note: the Norwegian authorities do not recognize the 5-year extension granted by France to CNIs issued between 2004 and 2013. If your card is in this case, use your passport. For Svalbard, a valid passport is strongly recommended.
Health
No vaccination is mandatory. Up-to-date DTP is recommended. In 2026, the Quai d'Orsay reports an upsurge in measles cases: check your vaccination status. No risk of malaria, drinking tap water everywhere.
Currency and payment
The Norwegian krone (NOK) is the national currency (EUR 1 for about NOK 10.86 in August 2026). Norway is a near-cashless society: credit cards are accepted everywhere, including for a coffee. No need to change money before departure.
Getting around
Between major cities, domestic flights (Norwegian, SAS) are often the fastest way. Ferries serve fjords and islands (Fjord1, Norled). The Bergen-Oslo train (Bergensbanen, 7 hours) is one of the most beautiful train routes in the world. The car is essential for exploring Lofoten and the panoramic roads (Trollstigen, Atlanterhavsveien) freely. In winter, snow tyres are mandatory.
Tips and Usage
Tipping is not compulsory in Norway but is appreciated in restaurants (about 10%). The society is very egalitarian: no hierarchy in queues, great discretion in transport. Almost all Norwegians speak excellent English.
