Why Sri Lanka on an organized tour?

Sri Lanka is like a teardrop from India, but it concentrates in a few hundred kilometers what other countries take a lifetime to explore: a thousand-year-old fortress rock rising from the jungle, red trains crossing hills of green velvet tea, pealthy leopards in the Yala savannah and beaches lined with coconut palms facing the Indian Ocean.

The organized tour here is particularly clever: the mountain roads require attention, train reservations are limited, and a local guide transforms a visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth into a spiritual experience that you don't feel alone. In fourteen days, you will cross an entire island, from the former royal capital to the Dutch ramparts of Galle.

The particularity of Sri Lanka is that it offers weather that is valid almost all year round: while the west coast is watered by the southwest monsoon (May to October), the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is in the sun, and vice versa. It is therefore rare to come across a bad period, provided you choose the right region according to the season.

When to go to Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is subject to two opposing monsoons that divide the island into two climatic zones. The reference city for the cultural triangle (Sigiriya, Kandy, tea hills) is Kandy, at an altitude of 500 meters.

West Coast, South Coast and Cultural Triangle (Kandy, Sigiriya, Ella, Galle):The best time is December to March, with temperatures of 25 to 30°C and little rain. July-August remains possible despite the monsoon: the cultural triangle receives less rainfall than the coast, and the Esala Perahera festival in Kandy (one of the most beautiful in Asia) is held at the end of July-beginning of August.

East Coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay):Ideal from May to October, when the west is wet.

Avoid:October on the whole island (maximum rainfall, some parks closed).

Budget: How much does a tour in Sri Lanka cost?

Sri Lanka is an accessible mid-range destination. A meal in a local restaurant (rice and curry) costs 3 to 4 euros. A tuk-tuk for a few kilometers is negotiated in hundreds of rupees. Accommodation varies from guesthouses at 25 euros per night to charming boutique hotels at 120 euros. Organized tours of 12 to 14 days start at around 1,600 euros per person, excluding flights.

From the mythical rock of Sigiriya to the Dutch ramparts of Galle, each stage of Sri Lanka has its own personality. The cultural triangle (Sigiriya, Kandy) is the foundation of the circuit; the hill train and Ella are the moment of grace; Galle, breathing in front of the sea.

Practical advice

Formalities and visa

French nationals must obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before boarding, available on eta.gov.lk. Since May 2026, the ETA is free for French nationals: allow 24 hours of processing. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of entry. No vaccination is mandatory, but up-to-date hepatitis A, typhoid and DTP are recommended. Mosquito protection is essential (active dengue and chikungunya).

Getting around the island

The train is the most iconic and enjoyable means of transportation for the hills. 2nd class tickets (a few hundred rupees) are ideally booked through train stations or local agents. For the Cultural Triangle and National Parks, organized tours include transfers by chauffeured van. Tuk-tuks are ideal for short intra-city distances.

Two monsoons, two Sri Lanka

The island lives to the rhythm of two opposing monsoons. The southwest monsoon (Yala) hits the west coast, the south and the hills from mid-May to October. The northeast monsoon (Maha) waters the east coast from December to February. This duality allows you to find good weather somewhere all year round, but you have to adapt your itinerary to the chosen season.

Culture and uses

Sri Lanka is a country with a Theravada Buddhist majority (70%) with large Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities. Clothing covering the shoulders and knees is mandatory in temples and religious sites. It is customary to remove your shoes before entering a temple. Photographing Buddha statues with your back to them is frowned upon. Tipping (10%) is appreciated in restaurants and for local guides.
