Why Sierra Leone

There are destinations that change a traveler. Sierra Leone is one of them. Not because it's easy, convenient or Instagram-ready, but because it's real: white sand beaches still without umbrellas or beach resorts, a rainforest populated by wild chimpanzees a few hours from the capital, and a population whose legendary hospitality, the famous "kushe", immediately disarms.

The country went through a devastating civil war (1991-2002), an Ebola epidemic (2014-2016) and continues to rebuild. This resilience can be seen in the faces, in the energy of Freetown waking up, in the ecotourism projects that are flourishing around Tiwai Island. Travelling here also means choosing to go where your presence counts and directly supports local communities.

What awaits the traveler: River No. 2 Beach, a bay framed by coconut palms that regulars compare to the most beautiful beaches in Thailand in the 1990s. Chimpanzees that go down to drink a few meters from your bush camp. Pirogliers that swim up the Moa River at sunrise, in a silence interrupted by the calls of birds. Sierra Leone is one of the last secrets of West Africa, and it won't last forever.

When to go to Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone has two very distinct seasons, and the choice of travel period is decisive.

Dry season (November to March): the ideal period.Temperatures fluctuate between 22 and 33°C, the sky is clear, the roads passable and the beaches at the height of their beauty. December and January are the most pleasant months. A coastal wind cools the evenings in Freetown and on the peninsula. It is also the period when wildlife concentrates around the waterholes in the parks.

Rainy season (May to October): to be avoided for tours. The monsoon is one of the most intense in West Africa: Freetown receives an average of 3,800 mm of rain per year, with peaks of 590 mm in July. Inland roads become impassable, access to Tiwai Island and Outamba-Kilimi Park is cut off for several weeks. Only highly experienced travelers prepared for the unexpected can consider a stay in the green season.

April and Novemberare months of transition: a few showers but still largely passable. November is often recommended by local guides for the lush post-rain nature and the wildlife still very present.

How much does it cost

Sierra Leone is an accessible destination on the spot, although flights from Europe remain the main item of expenditure.

TheFlight ticketParis-Freetown with a stopover (Brussels via Brussels Airlines, Addis Ababa via Ethiopian, or Casablanca via Royal Air Maroc) is between €550 and €950 round trip depending on the season. There are no direct flights from France.

On site, a budget of€50 to €90 per daycomfortably covers accommodation in a mid-range guesthouse or lodge, meals and local transport. Daily life costs little: a dish of rice with fish (the national dish) is negotiated for €2 to €4 in a local restaurant, a bush taxi between two cities costs a few euros.

TheEcotourism lodgesaround Tiwai Island and Outamba-Kilimi Park are more expensive (€50 to €120 per night) because they include admissions, naturalist guides and sometimes meals. These rates remain reasonable in view of the experience offered and the support provided to local communities.

A 10-day organized tour in semi-guided format starts at around €1,400 per person excluding flights.

Where to go in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is a compact country (73,000 km²) but the roads make distances subjective. It all starts in Freetown.

Freetown and its peninsulaare the heart of any stay. The capital is a hilly town above the estuary, with its symbolic Cotton Tree, its colourful markets and its urban beaches (Lumley, Aberdeen). An hour south by a forest road, the Freetown peninsula reveals its jewels: River No. 2 Beach, Tokeh Beach and Kent Beach, three white beaches still almost deserted facing the Atlantic.

The Southis the land of forests and primates. Tiwai Island, recently classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the flagship site: a sanctuary island on the Moa River two hours from Bo. Eleven species of primates coexist in the dense forest, including the western chimpanzee and the pygmy hippopotamus. It is one of the most beautiful wildlife experiences in West Africa, without the crowds of the large Kenyan or Tanzanian reserves.

The Northis less visited but fascinating for travelers in search of raw adventure. The Outamba-Kilimi National Park, on the Guinean border, protects populations of common hippos visible at dawn from the banks. Further on, the mountains around Kabala offer the ascent of Mount Bintumani (1,948 m, the highest point in the country).

Practical advice

Entry requirements

A visa is mandatory for French nationals. Sierra Leone offers an online e-visa on its official immigration portal (deadline: 5 working days, price: approximately €50). In practice (situation on September 1, 2026), the visa on arrival at Lungi airport remains accessible because the e-visa system is not yet fully operational. As a precaution, initiate the online procedures before departure. There is no Sierra Leonean embassy in France.

The vaccine againstYellow fever is mandatory: the vaccination record is checked on arrival. Antimalarial prophylaxis is essential. Consult a travel medicine centre at least 6 weeks before departure.

The passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the return.

Transportation and travel

The arrival in Freetown is atypical: Lungi airport is on the other side of the estuary. Thewater taxi(30-40 min) or the public ferry (1h) are the standard options to/from the capital. The road bypass takes 3 hours minimum.

Inside the country, thebush taxis(shared minivans) connect the big cities at ridiculously low prices but for unpredictable durations. Car rental with driver is highly recommended to visit remote areas (Tiwai Island, Outamba-Kilimi park): budget 70-100 € per day all included.

Health and Safety

Medical infrastructure is very limited: there is no structured emergency service in the country. AMedical repatriation insuranceis therefore absolutely essential before leaving. A few private clinics in Freetown (Aspen Medical Center) can provide routine care.

Drink only bottled water. Avoid ice cubes and unpeeled fruit outside of trusted restaurants.

Culture and uses

Sierra Leoneans are known for their warm hospitality: the "kushe" (hello in Krio) followed by an "ow di bodi?" (how are you?) opens all doors. Learning a few words of krio is much appreciated and often triggers friendly laughter.

Dress must be respectful outside the beaches. Photos of people, official or military buildings are to be avoided without prior agreement. Tipping is welcome in ecotourism lodges (5-10% of services).

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a visa to go to Sierra Leone when you are French?

Yes, a visa is mandatory for French nationals. Sierra Leone has set up an online e-visa system on the official immigration portal, to be applied for before departure (recommended deadline: 5 working days, approximate price: €50). In practice, obtaining a visa on arrival at Lungi airport remains possible because the e-visa system is not yet fully operational (information diplomatie.gouv.fr, March 2026). There is no Sierra Leonean embassy in France: in case of a consular visa, contact the competent embassy in Guinea.

When to go to Sierra Leone: when is the best time?

The dry season (November to March) is the ideal period: pleasant temperatures (22-33°C), clear skies, passable roads and beaches at their best. December-January are the most beautiful months. The rainy season (May to October) is to be avoided at all costs for tours: rainfall reaches 590 mm in July, inland roads become impassable and national parks are cut off. April and November are acceptable transition months.

Is Sierra Leone safe for tourists?

Sierra Leone is in a zone of heightened vigilance according to the Quai d'Orsay, with the exception of the border area with Liberia (not recommended unless there is an imperative reason). Freetown and the peninsula are frequented by expatriates and a few tourists without major incident, but vigilance is required: armed robberies have been reported in some areas (Lumley Beach, Aberdeen), and it is not advisable to go out alone on foot at night. Outside the capital, the risks are greatly reduced but the infrastructure is limited. A local guide is strongly recommended for remote areas.

What is the budget for a trip to Sierra Leone?

Expect to pay between €45 and €90 per day on site (accommodation in a guesthouse or mid-range lodge, meals, local transport). A 10-day organized tour starts at around €1,400-1,600 per person excluding flights. The Paris-Freetown plane ticket (with stopover) costs between €550 (low season) and €950 (high season). Everyday life is cheap: a local meal costs €3-5, a shared taxi a few cents. Quality lodges in the parks (Tiwai Island) are more expensive (€50-120 per night).

What vaccines are mandatory and recommended for Sierra Leone?

Yellow fever vaccination is MANDATORY to enter Sierra Leone: it must be done at an approved international vaccination centre and the vaccination record will be checked on arrival. In addition, preventive antimalarial treatment is essential (malaria is endemic). Recommended vaccinations include: hepatitis A and B, typhoid, rabies (rural or with animals), DTP and up-to-date measles. Consult a travel medicine centre at least 6 weeks before departure.

How to reach Freetown from Lungi Airport?

Lungi International Airport (FNA) is located on the other side of the Sierra Leone estuary, opposite the capital. There are three options: the public ferry (1 hour, the most common and cheapest option), private water taxis (30-40 minutes to Aberdeen or Murray Town Wharf, which are more comfortable), or the long road bypass (3 hours minimum due to traffic). Hospitals recommend the ferry or water taxi. Plan the journey in your arrival and departure schedule.

What currency to use in Sierra Leone?

The official currency is the Leone (SLE), refounded in 2022 with a new Leone worth 1,000 old Leones. The exchange rate is about 26.58 SLE for 1 euro (August 2026). ATMs exist in Freetown but are rare in the interior of the country: carry enough cash for rural areas. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants in Freetown. US dollars and euros are easily exchangeable at Freetown's exchange offices.

What languages are spoken in Sierra Leone?

The official language is English, a legacy of the British colonial period. But Krio (English-based Creole) is the real lingua franca: spoken by 97% of the population as a lingua franca, it allows communication throughout the country. The main ethnic languages are Mende (south) and Temne (north). The inhabitants of Freetown generally have a sufficient level of English to communicate with travellers. Learning a few words of krio ("kushe" for hello, "tenki" for thank you) is very much appreciated.

What is Tiwai Island and how do I get there?

Tiwai Island is a 12 km² river island on the Moa River, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2025, which is home to one of the highest concentrations of primates in the world: 11 species including the western chimpanzee, the colobus and the pygmy hippopotamus. It is a research and ecotourism site managed by the NGO Environmental Foundation for Africa. To get there from Freetown, you have to reach Bo by bush taxi (4 hours), then Kambama village (1 hour), and cross the river by canoe. A minimum of one night on the island is essential to observe the fauna at dawn.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiwai_Island
Is Sierra Leone a family-friendly destination?

Sierra Leone is a demanding destination that is more suitable for experienced or adventurous travelers than for families with young children. The sanitary infrastructure is very limited (no emergency service in the country according to diplomatie.gouv.fr), the roads are degraded, the tap water is not drinkable. For families with teenagers who are sensitive to off-circuit adventure and without comfort requirements, the experience can be extraordinary, especially on Tiwai Island. Health repatriation insurance is absolutely essential.
