Rwanda

Rwanda is the only place in the world where you can meet the gaze of a mountain gorilla in its natural habitat, surrounded by primeval forests that climb all the way to volcanoes. The Land of a Thousand Hills has transformed this unique experience into a premium safari destination that is both wild and remarkably well organized.

Why Rwanda

There are trips that change the way we look at the world for a long time. Meeting the eyes of a mountain gorilla in the middle of the Virunga forest is one of them. A few meters from you, in the silence of the bamboo groves, an animal that looks 98% like you observes you with the same quiet curiosity. An hour of rare intensity, renewed every morning in the Volcanoes National Park since Rwanda has made conservation an absolute priority.

The land of a thousand hills, a small landlocked territory the size of Belgium, has accomplished in thirty years what few African states have achieved: total economic and ecological reconstruction after the trauma of the 1994 genocide. Kigali, its immaculate capital, has displayed an astonishing modernity, punctuated by art galleries, gourmet restaurants and plastic-free streets, since the government banned polyethylene bags in 2008. Nature, on the other hand, has followed the same path: the Akagera Park has found its lions and rhinoceroses, the Nyungwe forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has preserved its 13 species of primates.

Traveling to Rwanda means choosing a destination that makes sense on every level: the continent's most spectacular wildlife, a deep culture marked by history and resilience, and a model of responsible tourism where every permit sold directly funds habitat protection. A trip that weighs its price and is worth every penny.

When to go

Rwanda can be visited all year round thanks to its particularly mild tropical climate, but conditions vary significantly from month to month.

TheLong dry season (June-September)is the queen period. The park tracks are passable, the more open vegetation makes it easier to observe animals in Akagera, and gorilla treks in Virunga are done under often clear skies. It is also the busiest and most expensive period: gorilla permits are snapped up months in advance. TheShort dry season (January-February)offers an interesting alternative, with fewer crowds and lower fares.

TheRainy seasons(March-May for the big one, September-November for the small one) make the mountain tracks muddy and the gorilla hikes physically demanding. On the other hand, the vegetation explodes green, the birds nest, the baby gorillas show up in the clearings, and the prices drop sharply. Seasoned and cheap travelers will find what they are looking for.

Remember: whatever the month, bring warm clothes for the altitude of Virunga (up to 4,500 m) and raincoats. In Kigali (1,567 m), temperatures are always mild, never below 14°C or above 29°C.

How much does it cost

Rwanda is a premium destination in the East African region. Conservation is expensive, and Rwandans have chosen quality tourism over mass tourism. This positioning is reflected in the prices.

The gorilla permit represents the largest budget item:approx. 1,500 USD per person(official RDB price 2025-2026), non-negotiable and non-refundable in case of late cancellation. It is a direct investment in the conservation of mountain gorillas, whose global population does not exceed 1,063 individuals.

Excluding gorilla licenses, count80 to 200 EUR per dayfor accommodation, meals and transfers (depending on the standard chosen). Premium bush lodges around the Volcanoes and Akagera can reach 500 to 800 EUR per night per person on a full-board basis. More accessible options exist in Musanze, Rubavu and in the Nyungwe ecolodges.

A 10-day tour organized from France starts inapprox. EUR 2,850 per person(excluding flights and licences). By adding a Paris-Kigali flight with a stopover (650 to 1,200 EUR depending on the season) and the gorilla permit (1,500 USD), the total budget for a complete stay is betweenEUR 5,000 and EUR 7,000 per person.

Where to go

Rwanda is easily covered in a few days' drive: the distances between the main parks do not exceed 3 to 4 hours by car from Kigali, on asphalt roads in good condition.

To the north, theVolcanoes National Parkand its gateway city Musanze concentrate the most sought-after experience in the country: the mountain gorilla trek, but also the hike on the Bisoke volcano, the visit of the tombs of Dian Fossey and the trek of the golden monkeys, a species endemic to Virunga. To the east, theAkagera Parkoffers an African-style savannah safari, rewarded by sightings of the Big Five in a park in full renewal. To the southwest, theNyungwe Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to chimpanzees and a spectacular Canopy Walk. Finally, theLake Kivu, shared between Rubavu in the north and Karongi in the centre, punctuates any circuit with a lakeside decompression stage.

Kigaliwell deserves its two days of immersion: the Genocide Memorial is an essential passage to understand today's Rwanda, and the Kimironko district vibrates with a contemporary art of living, between markets, specialty cafes and galleries.

Kigali surprises all those who discover it: its sweeping streets, its eucalyptus-covered hills and its design hotels make it one of the most pleasant capitals in Africa. The Genocide Memorial, an unmissable place of contemplation, tells with overwhelming sobriety the progress made since 1994. A natural starting point for any Rwandan tour, Kigali is also a city of living art, creative gastronomy and trendy cafes.

Musanze is the gateway city to the Volcanoes National Park, where the most intense experience on the continent begins: the mountain gorilla trek. In the early morning, the guides lead the walk through the bamboo groves and the hagenia forests to lead the groups to meet the gorilla families. An hour in front of them, in an inhabited silence, remains engraved for life.

Practical advice

Formalities

French nationals have noNo need for a visato enter Rwanda for up to 30 days. Simply present your passport upon arrival in Kigali (KGL). The validity of the passport must be at least 6 months after the date of departure from Rwanda.

On the health side, theantimalarials are essential(atovaquone-proguanil or doxycycline, to be started before departure: consult your doctor). The recommended vaccines are hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and up-to-date DTP. No yellow fever vaccine is required when arriving from France, unless your trip includes transit in a high-risk country.

In 2026, aEbola alertis active at the borders with the DRC and Uganda. Respect health instructions: avoid contact with sick animals, wash your hands regularly, and seek immediate medical attention in case of symptoms within 21 days of return.

Reserve gorilla permits

TheGorilla permits must be booked in advanceon the official portal of the Rwanda Development Board (rdb.rw). In high season (June-September), the slots leave several months in advance. Each permit is nominative and non-transferable. The trek starts at 7am from the park headquarters in Kinigi (20 minutes from Musanze). Bring gaiters, gloves and waterproof clothing whatever the weather.

Getting around

The minibus network (matatu) covers the entire country at very low fares, but the delays are unpredictable. For park tours, a4x4 with driver-guideis essential and included in almost all organized tours. The national roads between Kigali, Musanze, Rubavu and Huye are paved and in good condition. The forest tracks (Nyungwe) require a 4x4.

In Kigali, motorcycle taxis (motorcycles) wear a regulation passenger helmet. The Yego Moto and SafeMotos applications allow you to control a reliable motorcycle from your phone.

Culture and uses

Rwanda is a country that deeply respects collective rules. Thecleanlinessis a strong national value: plastic bags have been banned since 2008, and a community clean-up day (Umuganda) takes place on the last Saturday of each month in the morning. Participating in Umuganda, if you have the opportunity, is a unique immersion experience.

ThePhotographyof people must always be subject to prior authorization. Do not photograph military installations, government buildings or border areas: the ban is strictly enforced.

Kinyarwanda is the language of everyday life, but French and English are widely understood in tourist areas. English has become the main language of instruction since 2008: the younger generations master it better than French. A hello in Kinyarwanda ("Muraho") is always warmly welcomed.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a visa to go to Rwanda when you are French?

No. French nationals are exempt from visa requirements to enter Rwanda for up to 30 days, without prior procedure. Beyond 30 days, an eVisa is available online on the official Rwandan portal before departure.

How much does the gorilla permit cost in Rwanda?

The mountain gorilla trekking permit is issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and costs around USD 1,500 per person (official price 2025-2026). This permit includes a maximum of one hour in the presence of the family group, supervised by rangers. It is strongly recommended to book it several months in advance, especially in high season (June-September). Without a permit, access to the Volcanoes Park is impossible.

When to go to Rwanda: when is the best time?

The two best windows are June-September (long dry season, ideal conditions for gorillas and safari) and January-February (short dry season). The rainy seasons, March-May and September-November, make the tracks muddy and gorilla treks strenuous, but prices drop sharply and the vegetation is lush. The high season June-August is the busiest and most expensive.

What budget should I plan for a tour in Rwanda?

Rwanda is a high-end destination in East Africa. Expect to pay between €80 and €200 per person per day excluding gorilla permits (accommodation, meals, transfers). An organized tour of 9-10 days starts at around €2,850 per person (excluding flights and gorilla permits). The Paris-Kigali return flight costs between €650 (low season) and €1,200 (high season), with a stopover in Doha, Addis Ababa or Nairobi. If you add the gorilla permit (USD 1,500), the total budget for a 10-day stay easily rises to €5,000-7,000 per person.

Do I need vaccines to go to Rwanda?

No vaccination is required to enter Rwanda (except yellow fever if you come from a country at risk). The recommended vaccines are: up-to-date DTP, hepatitis A and B, typhoid. Antimalarial prophylaxis is mandatory: consult your doctor for atovaquone-proguanil or doxycycline. In 2026, an Ebola alert is active at the borders with the DRC and Uganda: respect the WHO's health instructions.

Is Rwanda a dangerous country for tourists?

Rwanda is one of the safest countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Kigali is known for its cleanliness and security, and crime is low. The border area with the DRC (Goma, Rusizi) is not recommended due to active armed conflicts. The Quai d'Orsay classifies the country as being on heightened vigilance, mainly because of the situation in the east of the country and the global terrorist alert. For classic tourist circuits (Kigali, Volcanoes, Akagera, Nyungwe, Lake Kivu North), the risk is low.

How long does the Paris-Kigali flight take?

There is no direct flight from Paris to Kigali. The flight with a stopover lasts between 8 and 11 hours depending on the connection. The most frequent routes are via Doha (Qatar Airways, about 8:30 am), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines, 9-10 am) or Nairobi (Kenya Airways, 10-11 am). RwandAir also offers connections. Kigali airport (IATA code: KGL) is the country's only international air entry point.

What is the climate like in Rwanda?

Rwanda enjoys a very mild tropical climate, with no cold seasons or stifling heat. In Kigali (1,567 m), temperatures fluctuate between 14 and 28°C all year round. The country has two rainy seasons: the long one (March-May) and the short one (September-November). The long dry season (June-September) is the ideal time for outdoor activities. The altitude of the parks (volcanoes at 2,500-4,500 m) requires warm clothing even in the middle of summer.

What currency to use in Rwanda?

The currency is the Rwandan franc (RWF). 1 EUR is worth approximately 1,708 RWF (September 2026). Credit cards are accepted in hotels and large restaurants in Kigali. Outside the capital, cash is essential. US dollars (USD) are widely accepted, especially for gorilla permits and bush lodges. It is advisable to arrive with USD or withdraw it at Kigali airport.

https://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/convert/?Amount=1&From=EUR&To=RWF
Can Rwanda be combined with another country?

Yes, Rwanda combines perfectly with Uganda (Bwindi primates, gorillas and chimpanzees on the Ugandan side, Murchison Falls), Tanzania (Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar) or Kenya (Masai Mara). Most tour operators offer combined Rwanda-Uganda tours in 12-15 days. The Uganda-Rwanda border is open and passable by car from Musanze. An East Africa Pass e-visa allows entry into Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya on the same visa.
