Why Papua New Guinea

There is still a territory to the east of the island of New Guinea where more than 800 distinct cultures coexist in the same tropical forest. Papua New Guinea is not a destination: it is an experience of radical decentralization. Here, ancestral traditions are not reconstituted for tourists. They are alive, practiced every day, inscribed in the body paintings, wooden totems and ceremonial dances that have resonated on the highlands for millennia.

This country of 10 million inhabitants, barely smaller than France, has 839 languages listed. Each valley, each village in the Highlands can have its own language, its own rituals, its own social rules. Travelling to Papua New Guinea means crossing a cultural continent concentrated in a small space, where the human encounter exceeds all that the usual destinations can offer.

For the diver, the naturalist or the traveler off the beaten track, PNG is also a promise of pristine nature. The Madang reefs are among the richest in the Pacific. The forests of the Highlands are home to birds of paradise whose courtship displays leave you speechless. And the Sepik River, a huge artery of the flooded plain, leads to villages where the houses of the spirits keep some of the most powerful tribal art in the world.

When to go

Papua New Guinea has two distinct seasons. The dry season, from June to September, is the ideal time to travel: temperatures hover around 28 degrees, rainfall drops to less than 70 mm per month in Port Moresby, and the Highland tracks remain passable. Diving visibility is maximum during this period.

The rainy season, from November to May with a peak from February to May (up to 385 mm in Port Moresby in May), makes land routes in the Highlands very difficult. Tracks turn into quagmires, some roads are cut off, and the bird life becomes more discreet.

September is the month not to be missed. The Goroka Show, the national Sing-Sing festival, brings together hundreds of tribes in traditional costumes and paintings every mid-September. It is the most photographed event in the Pacific, an explosion of colors, feathers and rhythms that no reconstructed festival can match. Book at least 6 months in advance: the Goroka lodges are fully booked from March.

How much does it cost

Papua New Guinea is a niche destination, and the prices reflect it. Quality accommodation is scarce and expensive (50 to 200 EUR per night). Internal transport (local Air Niugini flights, boats) represents a significant budget item. A 10-day organized tour with guide and decent accommodation starts at around 3,500 EUR per person (excluding flights from France).

There is no such thing as a non-stop flight from Paris to Port Moresby. It costs between €1,400 and €2,200 for a round trip with one or two connections (Singapore, Brisbane or Tokyo). In total, expect to pay between €5,000 and €9,000 for a 14-day trip, including flights, depending on your choice of accommodation and activities.

The currency is the Papuan kina (PGK): 1 EUR is worth about 3.95 PGK (September 2026). Take enough cash for remote areas, where ATMs do not exist. Meals in local markets cost 3-7 EUR, but catering in tourist lodges is much more expensive (20-50 EUR per meal).

Where to go

Papua is large, and distances are not at the speed of a European road network. A successful tour requires choices. The Highlands (Goroka, Mt Hagen) are home to the most spectacular tribal culture. The north coast (Madang) is a diver's paradise. The Sepik River plunges into a world of its own. And the islands (Trobriand, New Britain) offer access to even more isolated traditions.

The Highlands: the tribal heart

The high-altitude valleys between Goroka and Mt Hagen are home to the most famous tribes, those whose faces painted in red, yellow and white have made PNG world famous. The Sing-Sing festivals (Goroka in September, Hagen in August) are the best times to experience this cultural diversity. Outside of festivals, excursions to the surrounding villages allow for authentic encounters with the locals, supervised by local guides.

The Sepik River: art at the source

Sepik is not a tourist site. It is a huge river system, bordered by villages connected only by water, where tribal art is produced not for sale but for rituals. The masks, totem poles and sculptures that can be found in dugout canoes in these villages are among the most powerful in all of Oceania. A three- to five-day trip down the river, with overnight stays in river lodges or homestays, is the most powerful human experience PNG has to offer.

Madang and the North Coast: Diving into the Unknown

Wrecks from the Second World War lie by the dozens in the lagoons of Madang, at accessible depths. Japanese boats invaded by corals, propeller planes wrapped in giant sponges, virgin reefs that the currents of the equator keep in perfect health. For the diver, Madang is not just another destination: it is a revelation.

Port MoresbyTour start

Port Moresby

1-2 days

The capital of Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby is the obligatory entry point for most tours. The city doesn't shine with charm, but the National Museum and Art Gallery offers a remarkable introduction to the country's 800 cultures, and the village of Paga Hill offers access to authentic markets on stilts above the lagoon. A logistical base before any outback adventure.

Goroka

Goroka

2-3 days

Perched at 1,600 meters in the Eastern Highlands, Goroka is known around the world for its Goroka Show, the great Sing-Sing festival that brings together hundreds of tribes in traditional dress every mid-September. Outside of the festival, the town is a pleasant base to explore the surrounding villages, smell the local coffee (one of the best in Asia-Pacific) and meet the people of the Highlands.

Madang

Madang

3-4 days

Madang, on the north coast, is nicknamed the most beautiful city in the Pacific by its visitors. Its turquoise lagoons, World War II shipwrecks and pristine coral reefs make it the undisputed capital of Papuan diving. The floating market, the villages on the edge of the mangroves and the leniency of the locals make it a peaceful and fascinating stopover.

Mt Hagen

Mt Hagen

2-3 days

Papua New Guinea's second largest city, Mt Hagen is the heart of the Western Highlands and the gateway to the country's most isolated tribes. Its own Sing-Sing festival, less known than Goroka's, attracts strikingly inventive body paintings. This is where deep cultural immersion tours really begin.

Fleuve Sepik

Fleuve Sepik

3-5 days

The Sepik is the Mississippi of Melanesia: a huge river that winds through floodplains inaccessible by other than a dugout canoe. The villages along its banks produce some of the world's most sought-after masks and totem poles by museums and collectors of primitive art. A multi-day dugout canoe trip with local guides is the most powerful human experience Papua has to offer.

Îles Trobriand

3-4 days

Known as the "islands of love" since the work of anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski in the early twentieth century, the Trobriands live according to a unique matriarchal system and fascinating cultural rites. Their pristine beaches, transparent waters and their cricket practice (a very improvised and festive version) make them an extraordinary destination for travelers curious about anthropology.

Rabaul

Rabaul

2-3 days

Rabaul, New Britain, is a ghost town surrounded by active volcanoes: an eruption in 1994 buried the old town under meters of ash. Today, Japanese World War II tunnels, still-smoldering lava fields, and underwater shipwrecks make it an out-of-this-world place of remembrance. The still-active Tavurvur volcano dominates the skyline from the harbor.

Our itineraries

Three travel logics, for three types of travellers.

The first itinerary focuses on Highland culture shock and is held in 10 days. It revolves around the Goroka Show and an immersion in the villages of the Western Highlands. This is the flagship tour for photographers and lovers of primitive cultures.

The second is the grand tour, 16 days, which adds the Sepik and Rabaul. It requires a certain physical condition and great adaptability to unforeseen logistics. This is the trip for those who want to understand PNG in its diversity.

The third tour turns towards the sea: Madang, Trobriand Islands and Rabaul. Ideal for divers or travellers who prefer islands to land immersion in the Highlands.

Practical advice

Formalities

French nationals need a visa to enter Papua New Guinea. An e-visa is available online (processing time: 3 to 5 working days, approximate cost: 25 EUR). The passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of return. Be sure to check the official page of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs before your departure: procedures may change.

Malaria is present throughout the country, including in Port Moresby. Antimalarial prophylaxis is essential: consult a travel doctor at least 4 to 6 weeks before departure to choose the appropriate treatment (Malarone, Doxycycline). The recommended vaccines are: DTP, hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and rabies for very remote areas.

Getting around

There is no rail network. Intercity travel is mainly by plane (Air Niugini, PNG Air), sometimes by boat or PMV (Public Motor Vehicle, shared vans). Roads are often in poor condition outside the big cities. In the Highlands, a 4x4 with a guide driver is the only reliable option. On the Sepik, motorized canoes are the only means of transport. Book all your internal logistics through a specialized agency before arrival.

Safety and culture

Port Moresby and Lae have a high violent crime rate. Avoid walking outings at night, only use taxis listed by your hotel. In the Highlands, tribal tensions can arise quickly: strictly follow the advice of your local guide.

Culturally, PNG is a society governed by complex codes. Always ask permission before photographing people. Respect ceremonial places and spirit houses (haus tambaran). Wear covering clothing in villages. A small gift (kina or useful product) may be appropriate to thank a village chief for hospitality, follow the advice of your guide.

Language and communication

Tok Pisin (English Pidgin) is the universal lingua franca: a few words learned before departure make a considerable impression on the locals. English works in the cities and with trained guides. In remote villages, your guide is the indispensable intermediary.
