Formalities and visa
French nationals must obtain a Visa on Arrival (VOA) or an e-VOA. The price is 500,000 IDR (about 25 euros), valid for 30 days renewable once. The e-VOA can be applied for online on molina.imigrasi.go.id between 48 hours and 14 days before arrival. Passport valid for at least 6 months is required. If you land in Bali (DPS), a Love Bali tourist tax of 150,000 IDR (about 7 euros) has been added since 2024.
No vaccinations are mandatory. The Institut Pasteur recommends: up-to-date DTP, hepatitis A, typhoid if you eat in local warungs. Bali is at very low risk of malaria for a classic tourist tour. An antimalarial is recommended if your itinerary includes Lombok, Flores, Sulawesi or Papua.
Safety and uses
The Quai d'Orsay classifies Java and Bali as heightened vigilance (not in the red zone). The provinces of Papua are not recommended unless there is an imperative reason. New Indonesian penal code (January 2026): adultery and cohabitation outside marriage are criminalized, possession of drugs is punishable by death. Zero tolerance.
In Balinese temples, a sarong (cloth around the waist) is mandatory: temples usually lend them at the entrance. Remove your shoes before entering any place of worship. Offering cigarettes or sweets to children is not recommended.
Getting around
In Java, transfers by car with driver or train (KA Java Bali Ekspres) between Yogyakarta and Surabaya are comfortable. Jeeps to Bromo and Ijen are booked through your local guide or TO. Bali can be visited mainly by rented scooter (10-15 EUR/day) or with a private driver (30-60 EUR/day). The Java-Bali crossing is by ferry from Banyuwangi to Gilimanuk (45 min) or by domestic plane.
Currency and payment
The Indonesian rupiah (IDR): 1 EUR is worth about 20,700 IDR (August 2026). ATMs are widespread in all tourist areas. Cash is essential in markets, warungs and small shops. Exchange offices in Bali (Kuta, Seminyak) offer excellent rates.
