Why India on an organized tour?

India is a country-continent: 1.4 billion people, 28 states, dozens of languages, a 5,000-year history. In a single day's drive, you go from a sixteenth-century Mughal fortress to a medieval spice market, and then to a sunset over a palace lake. This extraordinary sensory density is both the promise and the challenge of India.

The distances between the major stages of Rajasthan or the Golden Triangle are significant (300 to 400 km between the cities). The driving is perilous for the uninitiated. A local guide transforms a mysterious fort into a vivid tale of maharaja battles and court jealousies. With mastered logistics, India reveals its depth without its friction.

Note on climate: the data in this sheet correspond to Jaipur, the heart of Rajasthan and the reference city of the dominant circuits. The north (Delhi) and the Himalayan regions (Shimla, Darjeeling) are cooler. The south (Kerala, Tamil Nadu) follows a different monsoon calendar, shifted by a few weeks.

When to go to India?

The golden season runs from October to March. The Indian winter (November-February) offers mild days (20-30°C in Rajasthan), cool nights, and clear skies, ideal for photos. January hosts the Jaipur Literature Festival and the Makar Sankranti Kite Festival. October and November are marked by Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and the spectacular Pushkar Camel Fair.

Absolutely avoid April-September for the lowland circuits. The heat reaches 42°C in May in Jaipur, and the monsoon (June-September) turns the roads into torrents. Only the Himalayan altitudes remain passable in summer.

Budget: how much does a tour in India cost?

India is an affordable destination once you are there. A meal in a dhaba (local restaurant) costs 2 to 5 EUR, a rickshaw less than 2 EUR. On the other hand, flights from Paris represent a significant item (450 to 950 EUR depending on the season). Organized tours of 9 to 15 days (Golden Triangle or Greater Rajasthan) start at around 1,200 EUR per person, including accommodation and local transport, flights not included.

Must-see cities

Rajasthan concentrates the majority of the circuits. Each city has its own colour: Delhi the imperial, Agra the eternal, Jaipur the rose, Jodhpur the blue, Udaipur the romantic, Jaisalmer the golden. Varanasi, in the east, and Pushkar complete the thematic itineraries.

DelhiTour start

Delhi

2-3 days

A sprawling capital of 30 million people, Delhi is a superimposition of civilizations: the old Mughal city with the Red Fort and Jama Masjid, colonial New Delhi designed by Lutyens, and a bustling ultramodern metropolis. An essential gateway to any tour of northern India, it deserves at least two days for its UNESCO-listed monuments and labyrinthine bazaars.

Agra

Agra

1-2 days

Agra is first and foremost the Taj Mahal: this white marble mausoleum commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife is one of the absolute masterpieces of humanity. But the city has other splendours in store: the Agra Fort and the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah complete a must-see stop on the Golden Triangle. The sunrise over the Taj remains a timeless experience.

Jaipur

Jaipur

2-3 days

The "Pink City" of Rajasthan, bathed in warm light and pink sandstone buildings, is the heart of the Rajasthan circuit. The Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds) with its 953 stone lattice windows, the hilltop Amber Fort and the City Palace formulate a Mughal-Rajput court architecture of incomparable richness. Jaipur is also a paradise for textiles, jewellery and precious stones.

Jodhpur

Jodhpur

2 days

Nicknamed "the Blue City", Jodhpur offers a stunning panorama of a sea of houses painted in indigo, a shade that originally protected against mosquitoes. The fort, perched on a rocky peak at 125 metres, is one of the most imposing in Rajasthan. The bustling old town and its merchants selling Rajasthani spices, textiles and embroidery complete the picture.

Udaipur

Udaipur

2-3 days

Udaipur is the most romantic of Rajasthan's cities. The City Palace is reflected in the waters of Lake Pichola, and the legendary Lake Palace, the former summer residence of the maharajas, floats like a mirage in the middle of the lake. It is in these fairytale settings that James Bond's "Octopussy" was filmed. The haveli of the Bagore district and the terraces with a view of the sunset are unforgettable.

Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer

2-3 days

In the heart of the Thar desert, the "Golden City" rises from the sands like a mirage. Its 12th-century fort, made entirely of golden-yellow sandstone, is one of the few inhabited forts in the world: shops, richly decorated haveli and small restaurants are crammed into a medieval labyrinth. The night in a camp under the desert stars, to the rhythm of Rajasthani musicians, is the experience that every traveler mentions first.

Varanasi

Varanasi

2-3 days

One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth, Varanasi is the spiritual capital of India. On the ghats of the Ganges, life and death rub shoulders without detour: pilgrims purifying themselves in the sacred river, Ganga Aarti ceremonies set on fire at dusk, funeral pyres at Manikarnika Ghat. Varanasi is India at its rawest and most overwhelming, a journey within a journey.

Pushkar

Pushkar

1-2 days

Pushkar, the holy city on the shores of a sacred lake surrounded by 400 temples, is also the site of the world's largest camel fair. Every November, 50,000 camels, horses and cattle converge here, creating a unique spectacle of colors, turbans and folklore competitions. Outside of the fair, the peaceful city and its white ghats offer a welcome spiritual stop.

Practical advice

Formalities and visa

French nationals must obtain an e-visa before leaving, via the official portal indianvisaonline.gov.in. The application takes a few minutes online and must be submitted at least 4 days before arrival (ideally 2 to 4 weeks before). Please allow for a processing fee of around EUR 25. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your return date.

No vaccination is required to enter India, but several are strongly recommended: up-to-date DTP, hepatitis A, typhoid. Malaria is present throughout the country, including in cities: prophylactic treatment is recommended after consultation with a travel doctor. Consult the Quai d'Orsay (diplomatie.gouv.fr) India sheet before departure for safety updates.

Getting around

On an organized tour, all transfers between cities are included, usually by air-conditioned car with driver. This is the most comfortable formula. For the self-employed, the Indian Railway Network (IRCTC) is efficient on the main lines and must be booked several weeks in advance. Avoid driving yourself: the Indian Highway Code is a reality of its own.

In the city, rickshaws (cyclo or car) and Ola/Uber apps are available in major cities. Always negotiate the price before getting into a traditional rickshaw.

Culture and uses

India is a mosaic of cultures and religions: Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Jainism often coexist in the same neighborhood. In temples and mosques, cover your shoulders and knees and take off your shoes. Accept a glass of chai (spiced milk tea) if offered: it is a sign of hospitality. Haggling is the order of the day in the bazaars.

Exclusive bottled water, without exception. Avoid raw vegetables and ice cubes in small restaurants. Wash your hands regularly. These simple precautions prevent the vast majority of digestive disorders.

Jet lag and money

India is +3h30 from Paris in summer time, +4h30 in winter time. The difference is moderate and absorbs quickly. The currency is the Indian rupee (INR): 1 EUR is worth about 111 INR (August 2026). ATMs are ubiquitous in tourist areas. Cash remains essential for markets, local transport and tips.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a visa to go to India when you are French?

Yes. French nationals must obtain an e-visa before leaving. The application is made online on the official portal indianvisaonline.gov.in, at least 4 days before arrival. The tourist visa is available for 30 days, 1 year or 5 years. Count about 25 EUR in fees (plus 3% bank fees). Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your departure date.

When to go to India for a Rajasthan or Golden Triangle tour?

The best time is from October to March, when the climate is dry and pleasant (18 to 30°C during the day in Rajasthan). November and February are particularly recommended: no excessive crowds, ideal temperatures. January is excellent but coincides with the Jaipur Literature Festival and the Pushkar Fair at the end of October-November, which drive up prices and bookings. Avoid April-September at all costs: the heat (up to 42°C) and the monsoon (June to September) make the tours in the plains very difficult.

What is the budget for a tour in India?

Expect to pay between €40 and €90 per day for an organized tour (accommodation, meals, transfers, guides). A 9-day organized tour (Golden Triangle) starts from €1,200 per person, excluding flights. A 15-day Greater Rajasthan is around €2,000. Round-trip flights from Paris to Delhi are priced between €450 (low season) and €950 (high season). There, life is very cheap: a local meal costs 2 to 5 EUR, a rickshaw less than 2 EUR.

Is India a dangerous country for tourists?

The major tourist destinations (Rajasthan, Golden Triangle, Varanasi) are classified as standard enhanced vigilance by the Quai d'Orsay, like most of the countries visited. Some areas are formally discouraged: Kashmir, Pakistani and China borders, Manipur state. Common crime (scams, pickpockets in crowded bazaars) is more frequent than physical violence. On an organized tour with a guide, the level of security is very satisfactory. Never accept food or drink from strangers, especially on trains.

What vaccines do I need to go to India?

No vaccinations are required to enter India (except yellow fever if you arrive from an endemic country). The recommended vaccines are: up-to-date DTP, hepatitis A, typhoid. Hepatitis B is recommended according to your exposure profile. Rabies (stray dogs are very present) is recommended if hiking or contact with animals. Important point: malaria is present throughout the country, including in major cities. Prophylactic treatment is recommended by travel doctors.

How long does the flight from Paris to Delhi take?

The direct flight from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Delhi (Indira Gandhi International) takes about 8 to 9 hours. Air France and Air India operate direct flights. Many airlines (Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa) offer flights with a stopover of 2 to 4 hours, for total durations of 10 to 13 hours. The direct flight remains the best option to minimize fatigue on arrival.

What currency to use in India?

The currency is the Indian rupee (INR). 1 EUR is worth approximately INR 111 (August 2026). ATMs are available in all major tourist cities. Credit cards are accepted in hotels, mid- and high-end restaurants and shops in tourist areas. Cash is still essential for markets, rickshaws and small restaurants. Warning: do not exchange currency on the sidewalk; use official exchange offices or banks.

What is the best season to see the Pushkar Camel Fair?

The Pushkar Camel Fair is held every year in late October or early November, according to the Hindu lunar calendar (Kartik Full Moon). In 2026, it is expected to be held around November 20-25. It is one of the most spectacular events in Asia: 50,000 camels, turban competitions, acrobatics and Rajasthani music. Book accommodation and tours well in advance (6 months minimum) as the demand is extraordinary.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pushkar_Fair
Should you rent a car to visit Rajasthan?

For tours in Rajasthan, renting a car with driver is the most comfortable and safest option: the distances between cities are long (e.g. Jaipur-Jodhpur: 330 km), the driving is chaotic and exhausting for a foreigner. A local driver-guide costs 50 to 80 EUR per day for an air-conditioned car. Organized tours usually include all transfers. The only reasonable alternative: the Indian train (IRCTC), comfortable and punctual on the main lines, but to be booked several weeks in advance.

https://www.evaneos.fr/inde/
Can you visit India as a family with young children?

Yes, India is possible with the family, but requires rigorous preparation. Children from 7-8 years old particularly appreciate forts, elephants and camel safaris. Points to watch out for are: food hygiene (exclusive bottled water, avoiding raw vegetables and unpeeled fruit outside of large hotels), malaria (age-appropriate prophylactic treatment), and heat if you are travelling outside the ideal period (Nov-Feb). Choose a tour with quality accommodation to limit digestive risks.
