Fiji

Fiji is 330 islands scattered in the South Pacific: turquoise lagoons, coral reefs among the richest on the planet, and a smile so legendary that it has been made into a word, the "Bula". Between ultra-luxury resorts on the Mamanuca and Yasawa beach inns, the archipelago caters to all budgets without ever betraying its promise of an absolute change of scenery.

Why Fiji

Three hundred and thirty islands scattered throughout the South Pacific, one hundred and ten inhabited, a smile so natural that it has its own word: "Bula". Fiji does not play in the same category as ordinary tropical destinations. Here, the lagoons change color every hour according to the angle of the sun, the coral reefs are among the richest and best preserved on the planet, and the human warmth of the inhabitants is not a brochure cliché: it is the reality of each village, of each kava evening shared with the locals.

The archipelago caters to a wide variety of travellers. The ultra-luxury resorts of the Mamanuca Islands rival the finest establishments in Bora Bora or the Maldives, with overwater bungalows over turquoise waters, lagoonside spas and breathtaking sunsets. A few hours by ferry to the north, the Yasawa Islands offer another version of Fiji: authentic beach inns, Fijian villages where you are invited to the kava ceremony, crowd-free diving on pristine reefs.

What makes Fiji unique is also its relative accessibility from Sydney or Auckland, its newfound political stability and the density of experiences within a manageable geographical perimeter. Two weeks are enough to combine the best of both worlds.

When to go

The dry and cool season (June to October) is the main period: mild temperatures between 24 and 27°C, low humidity, minimum rainfall in October (63 mm in Suva), and underwater visibility of up to 30 meters. July-August is the peak of tourism, with resorts booked several months in advance and prices at the top.

The rainy and cyclone season runs from November to April, with a maximum in January-March. Rainfall in Suva can exceed 435 mm in February, and tropical cyclones can hit the archipelago, disrupting inter-island connections and causing evacuations. This does not necessarily mean a missed stay (cyclones often have a precise trajectory that spares part of the archipelago), but the risk exists.

The "shoulder" of April-May and September-October offers an interesting compromise: cheaper, less crowded, with a limited weather risk. October is the driest month of the year in terms of sun and heat, just before the hurricane season resumes.

How much does it cost

Fiji covers an exceptionally wide budget spectrum, making it a destination that doesn't reserve its paradise for an elite.

At the entry level, a stay in a beach inn in the Yasawa costs €70-100 per person per day, accommodation, meals and activities included. Everyday life is affordable: a local meal costs €6-10 (curry, fried fish, dhal), a shared bus ride costs a few cents from FJD.

The mid-range (3-4 star resort in Mamanuca) varies between €150 and €300 per person per day, and the ultra-luxury options (Turtle Island, Laucala, Six Senses Fiji) often exceed €1,500 per night. An organized 2-week tour combining mid-range resort and island-hopping starts at around €2,200 per person excluding flights.

The flight itself represents the largest investment: count €950-1,800 round trip from Paris, with one or two stopovers depending on the connection (Singapore, Sydney, Auckland).

Where to go

Fiji is organized around two large islands (Viti Levu and Vanua Levu) and two iconic archipelagos (Mamanuca and Yasawa). The majority of travelers land in Nadi on Viti Levu, the international hub, before reaching the islands by fast ferry.

Nadi, mandatory entrance

Nadi is not the destination itself, but the starting point for everything: its port of Denarau sends hundreds of travelers to the Mamanuca and Yasawa every morning. Take the opportunity to visit the Hindu temple Sri Siva Subramaniya, the largest in the South Pacific, and its brightly painted gopurams.

Mamanuca, postcard Fiji

The Mamanuca are about twenty islands 30-90 minutes by ferry from Nadi. Castaway Island, Malolo Lailai, Tokoriki or Likuliku offer some of the most beautiful resorts in Oceania, with private beaches, spa, diving and kayaking included. Ideal for honeymooners and lovers of uncompromising luxury.

Yasawa, the accessible Eden

The Yasawa range stretches for 80 km to the northwest, wilder and less developed. The Blue Lagoon, the sea caves of Sawa-i-Lau and kava evenings in Fijian villages are the flagship experiences. The Yasawa Flyer serves each island daily, making island-hopping simple even solo.

Suva, the unexpected capital

Often overlooked, Suva is worth a 1-2 day stop. Its central market is brimming with pineapples, taro and colourful sarees, reflecting the diversity of Indo-Fiji. The Fiji Museum, one of the best in the Pacific, traces 3,500 years of the archipelago's history, from ancient sailing canoes to contemporary political turbulence.

Taveuni, the island of gardens and divers

The third island of the archipelago is the greenest and one of the most attractive for nature and diving enthusiasts. The Rainbow Reef, in the Somosomo Passage, is ranked among the ten best dive sites in the world. And the Bouma National Heritage Park offers beautiful hikes to the Tavoro waterfalls.

Vanua Levu, true tranquility

The second island of the archipelago, Vanua Levu remains on the fringes of mass tourism. Savusavu, its main port with geothermal springs, is an ideal base for exploring the Namena Marine Reserve and the vast deserted bays of the interior.

Nadi

1-2 days

Nadi is Fiji's must-see hub: its international airport welcomes almost all visitors, and it is from its docks that ferries and speedboats depart to the islands of Mamanuca and Yasawa. The city itself is not very charming, but the resorts that border it, between clear lagoons and infinity pools against a backdrop of coconut palms, set the pace for what awaits the archipelago.

4-7 days

The Mamanuca archipelago is made up of about twenty islands 30-90 minutes from Nadi by speedboat: it is the heart of postcard Fiji, with its ultra-luxury resorts, its pristine white sand beaches and its turquoise waters so transparent that you can see the fish from the shore. Castaway Island, Malolo or Tokoriki compete with romantic bungalows on stilts.

The Yasawa range stretches for 80 km northwest of Nadi: less developed than the Mamanuca, it attracts travelers in search of authenticity and reasonable prices. Beach inns are run by Fijian families, village life invites itself into kava evenings, and the sea caves of Sawa-i-Lau have something mystical under their limestone vaults.

Suva, the political and cultural capital of Fiji, is the liveliest city in Melanesia after Port Moresby. Its central market overflowing with pineapples, taro and colourful saris reveals the ethnic diversity of the island: Fijians, Indo-Fijians and Chinese coexist in a commercial effervescence. Practical advice

Formalities

French nationals are exempt from visa requirements to enter Fiji for up to 4 months. A passport valid for at least 6 months after the date of return must be presented, as well as a return or onward ticket. No prior procedure is necessary. Source: diplomatie.gouv.fr.

On the health side, no vaccination is compulsory. DTP, hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended. Dengue fever is present on the archipelago: wear repellent and covering clothing at dusk, especially in the rainy season.

Getting around

The Yasawa Flyer (South Sea Cruises) fast ferry connects Port Denarau with all the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands daily, with a flexible multi-day pass. For Taveuni and Vanua Levu, Fiji Airways and Northern Air operate domestic flights from Nadi and Suva in 30-45 minutes. Slower but cheap ferries connect Suva to Taveuni in 12 hours.

On Viti Levu, public buses are very economical between Nadi, Suva and Sigatoka. Shared taxis (mini-buses) complete the network. Car rental is useful for exploring the Coral Coast on Viti Levu.

Culture and uses

The "Bula!" is Fiji's universal word of welcome: be sure to throw it at the locals, it will invariably trigger a big smile. When visiting a village, cover your shoulders and wear a sarong (sulu). If you are invited to a kava ceremony, accept: it is a sign of respect and an unforgettable experience. Kava is a slightly narcotic drink made from kava pepper, served in half a coconut. No alcohol during the ceremony.

Tipping is not systematic in Fiji (Fijian culture obliges), but it is appreciated in resorts and for private excursions. Sundays are often strictly observed: some villages and shops close.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a visa to go to Fiji when you are French?

The Mamanuca (20-90 min from Nadi) is the archipelago of high-end resorts: easy access, modern facilities, overwater bungalows, 5-star service. The Yasawa (2-4 hours from Nadi by Yasawa Flyer) are more authentic and affordable: beach hostels run by Fijian families, village life, kava in the evening around the fire. The two combine perfectly over 2 weeks.
