The vast majority of the territory is formally advised against by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs because of repeated jihadist attacks. Only Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso remain classified as heightened vigilance. Why Burkina Faso

There are countries that mark a traveller for life, not for their postcards, but for the human density of what they offer. Burkina Faso is one of them. A country of Mossi culture and weavers, it carries within it a quiet dignity inherited from centuries of great pre-colonial kingdoms. The name itself says it: in Mooré and Dioula, "Burkina Faso" means "the land of honest men".

Ouagadougou, which the inhabitants colloquially call "Ouaga", is one of the most singular African capitals. Its Grand Marché, its bogolan workshops, its open-air kebab restaurants and its swarmed motorcycle taxis operate at a pace that belongs only to this city. Every two years, in odd-numbered years, FESPACO transforms the capital into the world capital of African cinema: filmmakers from Cameroon, Senegal, Mozambique, and the entire diaspora converge here to celebrate the continent's seventh art.

Bobo-Dioulasso, 360 km to the west, gives another measure of the country. More musical, more relaxed, it is home to the Great Mosque of Dioulassoba, a masterpiece of Sudano-Sahelian banco architecture, whose wooden beams protrude from the façade like outstretched hands. Outside the two cities, the Karfiguéla waterfalls and the Nazinga Ranch offer natural breathing spaces that are now difficult to access.

When to go

The dry season from November to January is the only fully recommended time to visit Burkina Faso. Temperatures, between 17 and 35°C in Ouagadougou, remain bearable. The sky is deep blue, the asphalt roads passable, the evenings cool. December is the ideal month: golden light, moderate crowds, end-of-year craft market.

FESPACO (late February, early March, odd-numbered years) attracts a generation of moviegoers despite the increasing heat (38°C). It is one of the rare opportunities to experience Ouagadougou in a state of collective celebration.

The rainy season from July to September combines humid heat, the risk of flooding and cut roads. It should be formally avoided. April remains the hottest month of the year (up to 39°C) and the most difficult.

How much does it cost

Burkina Faso is one of the cheapest countries in sub-Saharan Africa. A street meal (rice sauce, skewers) costs between 500 and 1,500 CFA francs (less than 3 euros). A room in a decent hotel in Ouagadougou costs 15,000 to 40,000 CFA francs (23 to 61 euros). Motorcycle taxi transport within the city costs a few hundred francs.

The real cost of the trip to Burkina Faso lies elsewhere: the Paris-Ouagadougou flight, always with at least one stopover, varies between 550 and 900 euros depending on the season and the company. Air Senegal (via Dakar), Royal Air Maroc (via Casablanca) or Ethiopian Airlines (via Addis Ababa) operate the route regularly.

Where to go

The territory accessible to travelers can be summed up in four destinations in the current situation. Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso form the heart of the trip, the Karfiguéla waterfalls and the Nazinga Ranch offer the only natural breathing space allowed by the security conditions. All rural areas and border regions are formally out of reach.

Ouagadougou

The capital concentrates most of what Burkina Faso offers to visitors. The Grand Marché is a total experience: printed fabrics, bogolan loincloths, spices, live chickens and crafts are mixed together in a continuous animation. The National Museum houses a beautiful collection of Bobo, Nuna and Mossi masks. The National Centre for Arts and Crafts (CNAA) allows you to see the craftsmen at work and buy directly from the producer.

For FESPACO, you have to plan well in advance: full hotels, high-demand screening tickets, the whole city is buzzing. The open-air screenings in the neighborhoods are the most memorable experience.

Bobo-Dioulasso

The country's second largest city and the first musical capital of Burkinabe West Africa, Bobo inspires immediate affection. The Dioulassoba district, around the Great Mosque, can be visited on foot in one morning. The banco mosque, classified as one of the jewels of African architecture, is not always open to non-Muslims: a respectful approach and a local guide make the visit easier. The central market offers a profusion of Dioula loincloths.

Karfiguéla Waterfalls

30 km from Bobo-Dioulasso, the Karfiguéla waterfalls are one of the few spectacular natural sites accessible in the country. In the middle of the dry season, the flow is limited. In September-October, when the rains come out, the falls are at their maximum, but the road can be damaged. Access by taxi or rented vehicle from Bobo is 45 minutes.

Ranch de Nazinga

150 km south of Ouagadougou, this 94,000-hectare ranch is home to one of the densest populations of savannah elephants in West Africa. 4x4 or walking safaris supervised by ranch guides allow for short-distance approaches. The on-site lodge offers rustic but functional accommodation. Check access and safety conditions on the road to Po before leaving.

Given the security constraints, the routes are deliberately short and concentrated in accessible areas. The Ouagadougou-Bobo-Dioulasso axis (asphalted, well-maintained national road) is the backbone of any trip to Burkina Faso.

Practical advice

Formalities

The visa is mandatory for French nationals. It must be obtained from the Embassy of Burkina Faso in France before departure: allow a minimum of 10 working days. The yellow fever vaccine is mandatory and the international certificate must be presented upon entry into the country. Antimalarial prophylaxis is essential, to be discussed with a travel doctor at least 4 to 6 weeks before departure.

Although the exchange rate is fixed (1 EUR = 655.96 XOF), ATMs are unreliable outside Ouagadougou. It is advisable to take euros in cash to exchange in exchange agencies or banks in major cities.

Getting around

Within Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso, motorcycle taxis (zémidjans) are fast, cheap and ubiquitous. Collective or city taxis complete the offer. For the Ouagadougou-Bobo axis (360 km), the TSR and STMB companies offer modern bus connections in 4 to 5 hours for less than 5 euros. Renting a vehicle with driver remains the most flexible solution to reach Nazinga or Karfiguéla, but you should check the safety conditions road by road.

Culture and uses

Burkina Faso is a country with a very large Muslim majority in the north, Christian and animist in the south, with a traditionally respectful coexistence. French is understood in the city, but a few words in Mooré (in Ouaga) or Dioula (in Bobo) are always appreciated. Proper dress is required in places of worship and markets. Photographs of people systematically require prior agreement. Punctuality is a flexible concept: allow flexibility in appointments.

Crafts to bring back: bogolan loincloths (mud-dyed cotton weaving), wooden statues and masks, lost-wax bronze jewellery, woven baskets.
