Why South Africa on an organized tour?
Eleven hours from Paris, South Africa concentrates in a single country what we spend a lifetime looking for in the four corners of the world. Table Mountain, which dominates Cape Town from its 1085 meters of flat basalt. The Big Five in the golden savannah of the Kruger. The vineyards of Stellenbosch at the foot of the mountains. The turquoise lagoons of Knysna. And Soweto, the township where Mandela and Tutu lived next to each other on the same street, now converted into a pilgrimage of freedom.
The distances between Cape Town and the Kruger are more than 1,500 kilometres, the seasons are reversed from the northern hemisphere, and road signs in rural areas can be surprising. A local guide turns a morning game drive into a field lesson on predator behaviour, and a well-chosen lodge puts your room within listening distance of lions.
A key point to understand before booking: the Cape and Kruger seasons are opposites. Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate (dry summer from November to February, rainy winter from June to August), while the Kruger is in a tropical zone with a rainy season in the austral summer (November-March) and a dry season in the winter (May-September). The optimal window to combine the two is the austral spring (September-November) or autumn (March-April).
