Practical advice
Formalities
French nationals do not need a visa to enter Senegal (exemption up to 90 days). A passport valid for at least 6 months after the expected date of return is sufficient. No prior procedure.
On the health side, no vaccine has been mandatory since France since March 2026, but yellow fever is strongly recommended, as well as up-to-date DTP, hepatitis A and antimalarials (chemoprophylaxis to be taken for the duration of the stay, in consultation with a doctor or an international vaccination center).
Getting around
The seven-seater (bush taxis) remains the most widespread and cheapest mode of intercity transport. Comfortable for short distances, they become exhausting on long journeys. For Casamance, a domestic flight from Dakar to Ziguinchor (Air Senegal, about 80-120 euros) is strongly recommended rather than a 12-hour drive via Gambia.
In Dakar, VTC applications (InDriver, Yango) make it possible to avoid negotiations with conventional taxis. In natural areas (Sine-Saloum, Casamance), motorized pirogues are the only mode of travel between islands and camps.
Driving is formally discouraged at night: herds without lighting, trucks broken down on the road, unsignposted roads. During the day, the national roads (Dakar-Mbour-Kaolack) are in good condition. The laterite tracks require a 4x4 in the rainy season.
Culture and uses
Wolof is the lingua franca between communities, French the official language. A few words of Wolof are enough to provoke smiles: "nanga def" (how are you), "mangi fi" (I'm fine), "jërejëf" (thank you).
Senegal is a Muslim-majority country (94% of the population), with a generally moderate and tolerant practice. Mouride and Tidjane Sufisms colour daily life. Modest dress outside the seaside areas is appreciated. In Casamance, animist, Catholic and Muslim communities coexist.
The ataya tea, served in three rounds of increasingly sweet fruit, is a ritual of hospitality: refusing the first drink is rude. Tipping is common (10% in a restaurant, a few hundred CFA francs for an informal guide or a canoe driver).
Important note: a law of March 30, 2026 has considerably increased the penalties for homosexual relations in Senegal (5 to 10 years in prison). The travelers concerned must take this into account in their public behavior.
