Saint Kitts and Nevis

St. Kitts and Nevis is two twin islands in the Lesser Antilles that have kept the secret: a UNESCO-listed fortress, almost deserted beaches and an unostentatious luxury that attracts the most discreet clientele in the Caribbean.

Why St. Kitts and Nevis

There are destinations that you don't reach by chance. Saint Kitts and Nevis, two federated islands in the heart of the Lesser Antilles, does not appear in general brochures: no airport directly connected to Paris, no mass hotel complexes, no crowds. This is precisely what makes it one of the most coveted destinations by those in the know.

From Basseterre, the capital with its British colonial alleys, to the almost deserted beaches of the southeastern peninsula, St. Kitts offers a no-frills relationship with the Caribbean: the sea, the palm trees, the volcano that closes the horizon, and the quality of light in the late afternoon that alone justifies the trip. Nevis, a 45-minute ferry ride away, is even more confidential: an almost round island dominated by a volcanic peak perpetually capped by clouds, colonial plantations converted into boutique hotels, and Pinney's Beach where the Four Seasons Resort has set up its plantation bungalows with the discretion of a distinguished guest.

The federation combines two rare assets in the Caribbean: a first-rate UNESCO monument (Brimstone Hill Fortress, an intact colonial fortress at 240 meters above sea level) and an accessible volcanic nature, from the rainforest of Mount Liamuiga to the coral reefs of the peninsula. A stay here is like nothing else in the region.

When to go

The ideal season runs from December to April, coinciding with the dry season of the Lesser Antilles. Temperatures fluctuate between 23 and 30°C, the trade winds maintain a permanent coolness and rainfall falls to its annual low (45-60 mm per month). January and February are particularly perfect: clear skies, calm seas, reasonable attendance outside the festive period.

The end of December and the beginning of January deserve a special mention: it's the Sugar Mas Carnival, the national carnival that transforms Basseterre into a six-week continuous party culminating in the Grand Parade on January 1st. Festive and unforgettable, but accommodation rates double and reservations are made months in advance.

On the other hand, the cyclone season (June to November) should be avoided for a first trip. The peak of cyclone risk is in September-October, with rainfall of up to 190 mm in October. Some experienced travellers choose August for the Nevis Culturama Festival (late July-early August) in full awareness of the weather risk and low prices: an option reserved for flexible adventurers.

How much does it cost

St. Kitts and Nevis is an upscale destination in the Caribbean landscape. Don't expect the prices of French Martinique or Guadeloupe: here, everything is imported, and the standard of living is in line with the English-speaking standards of the region.

A comfortable budget for a well-organized trip is between 230 and 350 EUR per person per day, including charming accommodation. A 10-night stay on a partial board basis, with some activities (diving, volcano hike, visit Brimstone Hill), costs between 3,500 and 5,000 EUR per person, including flight from Paris. In the luxury option (Four Seasons Nevis, private villa), budgets easily climb beyond 600 EUR per day.

Everyday life is less overwhelming: a meal in a local restaurant in Basseterre or Charlestown costs 12-20 EUR, a cocktail on the beach 6-10 EUR, the inter-island ferry about 20 EUR round trip. Local transport (shared minibuses) is very cheap (3-5 EUR per ride) but not very practical for the remote beaches, where the taxi remains essential (15-25 EUR per ride from Basseterre).

Where to go

Basseterre, the historic capital

Basseterre can be explored in half a day on foot: The Circus (miniature replica of Piccadilly Circus), Independence Square and its royal palm trees, St. George's Cathedral and the waterfront bustling with ferries and cruise ships. The public market in the morning is the best place to capture the daily life of the island.

Brimstone Hill Fortress, the UNESCO jewel

The most impressive monument of the federation is worth a whole half-day. From the cannons pointed at the Caribbean Sea to the museum retracing the history of colonialism and slavery, the visit is dense and moving. The ascent on foot from the car park is short but steep: comfortable shoes are essential.

Charlestown and Nevis Island

Charlestown is a capital on a human scale where time seems to have stopped. The birthplace of Alexander Hamilton (founding father of the United States, born in Nevis in 1755) is now an endearing museum. The Bath Hotel, the first hotel in the Caribbean founded in the eighteenth century around natural thermal springs, is worth a stop even for non-spa guests.

The Southeast Peninsula of St. Kitts

Accessible only by the Kennedy Simmonds Highway, the southeast peninsula is home to the island's most beautiful beaches: South Friars Bay, North Friars Bay, Sand Bank Bay. Little to no amenities, turquoise water, sometimes pelicans on the rocks. A full day spent on these beaches is enough to justify the trip.

Mount Liamuiga Volcano

Hiking to the volcano crater (1,156 m) is the flagship sporting activity of St. Kitts. The climb (3-4 hours round trip) crosses a dense rainforest populated by African green monkeys descended from animals brought by settlers in the seventeenth century. At the top, a crater lake and a view of seven neighboring islands. Guide recommended so as not to get lost in the forest.

The capital of the federation lies at the foot of the volcano in the heart of a crescent bay, with its lively waterfront and British colonial buildings with colorful tin roofs. The Circus district, a miniature replica of Piccadilly Circus, is a concentration of cafes, markets and daily life. This is where the ferry to Nevis docks.

The capital of Nevis is a charming unspoilt market town with an almost intact colonial atmosphere: cobbled streets, wooden houses with green blinds, a small fishing port. It is here that Alexander Hamilton, the founding father of the United States, was born, whose house is now a museum. Access from Saint Kitts is a 45-minute ferry ride.

Practical advice

Formalities

French nationals do not need a traditional visa but must obtain an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before departure, for around USD 17. The application is done online, usually processed within 24-72 hours. Passport valid for 6 months beyond the recommended return date.

No vaccinations are required upon entry (unless you are arriving from a country at risk of yellow fever). DTP, hepatitis A and measles recommended. No risk of malaria.

The federation is classified as Normal Vigilance by the Quai d'Orsay. Usual caution in Basseterre at night. The main precaution is meteorological in the hurricane season (June-November): taking out cancellation insurance is strongly recommended for any trip planned between July and October.

Getting around

Between the two islands, the ferry is the standard solution: regular departures from the port of Basseterre to Charlestown (Nevis), about 45 minutes, fare around 10 USD per trip. A faster taxi-boat service exists for higher fares.

On Saint Kitts, the main road goes around the island in about 1h30 by car. Collective minibuses serve the villages but not the remote beaches: the taxi remains convenient for the south-eastern peninsula and the hike to the volcano. Car rental (with international license) is possible in Basseterre for more autonomy. You drive on the left, British heritage.

Culture and uses

The official language is English, spoken with a tasty Caribbean accent. Kittitian Creole (or Kittitian Creole) is spoken among locals but travelers will have no problem in standard English. The locals are known for their warmth and hospitality.

Tipping is expected in restaurants and hotels: 10-15% if service is not included. Proper attire is required in villages and places of worship (shoulders and knees covered). On the private beaches of large hotels, dress codes are more flexible. The local emergency number is 911.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a visa to go to Saint Kitts and Nevis when you are French?

No traditional visa, but French nationals must obtain an electronic authorization (eTA) before departure, valid for up to 90 days. The cost is approximately USD 17 (approximately EUR 16). Passengers on a one-day cruise stopover are exempt. Valid passport recommended for 6 months beyond return.

When is the best time to visit St. Kitts and Nevis?

The ideal period runs from December to April: dry season, pleasant temperatures (23-30°C), calm seas and clear skies. January-March offers the best balance between weather, attendance and prices. The cyclone season (June-November) should be avoided: there is a real risk of tropical storms, with a peak in September-October. The Carnival Sugar Mas (end of December-beginning of January) is an exceptional festive moment but the prices are soaring.

What budget should I plan for a stay in Saint Kitts and Nevis?

St. Kitts and Nevis is an expensive destination, comparable to the French West Indies in the upper range. Expect to pay €115 to €230 per person per day (accommodation, meals, activities). A 7-night package starts at around €1,800 per person excluding flights. A meal in a local restaurant costs €12-20; at the Four Seasons or in high-end resorts, count €60-100. The flight from Paris with a stopover (Miami, Antigua or Saint-Martin) costs between €700 and €1,400 round trip.

The total travel time varies between 10 and 13 hours depending on the stopover. Basseterre Airport (SKB) is the only international airport in the federation. To connect Nevis from Saint Kitts, a ferry makes the crossing in 45 minutes (frequent departures from the port of Basseterre).

What is the Brimstone Hill Fortress and why should you visit it?

The Brimstone Hill Fortress is one of the best-preserved colonial fortresses in the Americas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Built between 1690 and 1790 at an altitude of 240 meters on a volcanic promontory, it once commanded the shipping lanes of the Eastern Caribbean. Today, it offers a 360-degree panorama of seven islands and a museum tracing the colonial and slavery history of the region. Admission: USD 15 (approx. EUR 14).

Is St. Kitts and Nevis a safe destination?

The federation is one of the safest destinations in the Caribbean. The Quai d'Orsay classifies Saint Kitts and Nevis on Normal Vigilance. Common crime remains moderate: usual caution in areas with little traffic at night in Basseterre. The main concern is meteorological: the hurricane season (June-November) requires you to monitor alerts and take out cancellation insurance. No geographical area is formally discouraged.

What is the Sugar Mas Carnival and when does it take place?

The Sugar Mas is the national carnival of Saint Kitts and Nevis, the largest festive event of the federation. Its name comes from cane sugar (historical pillar of the economy) and the carnival mask. The festivities extend over six weeks from November to the beginning of January, with their peak around Christmas and New Year: I open on December 26 (Boxing Day), Grand Parade of the brass bands on January 1 and Las Lap (last parade) on January 2. A period that is both very festive and more expensive in terms of accommodation.

Can you go diving and snorkeling in St. Kitts and Nevis?

Yes, both islands offer excellent diving and snorkeling sites, with coral reefs in good condition and a great wealth of marine fauna (rays, sea turtles, moray eels, barracudas). The best spots in St. Kitts are in the southeastern peninsula. In Nevis, Pinney's Beach Reef can be reached by snorkeling directly from the beach. Dive centers offer guided trips with equipment. Visibility is optimal from January to May (dry season, calm waters).
