Why Kyrgyzstan

There are countries that look like a set in an adventure movie. Kyrgyzstan is one of them. Perched in the heart of Central Asia, surrounded by the peaks of the Tian Shan ("the celestial mountains") which rise to more than 7,000 m, it unfolds a landscape of gentle violence: endless green valleys, vertiginous passes, high-altitude lakes with impossibly blue waters and steppes swept by a wind that belongs to no one. Here, 40% of the territory exceeds 3,000 m. Here, the nomads have not disappeared from the history books.

Because Kyrgyzstan is above all the country of living nomadism. Every summer, hundreds of Kyrgyz families set up their yurts (boz-uy, "grey house") on the jailoos, the mountain pastures, to graze horses, sheep and yaks as their ancestors did for millennia. Sharing their meal, sleeping in their yurt on the shores of Lake Song-Kul at an altitude of 3,000 m, waking up in the middle of herds and a silence that the cities have forgotten: it is an experience that few destinations in the world still offer with this authenticity.

Less than 5 hours from Osh (the country's second largest city, a crossroads of the Silk Road for 3,000 years) and a day's drive from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan keeps its promise on a single promise: to be truly disoriented, far from the marked circuits. No ostentatious monuments, no crowds photographing themselves in front of the same fountains. Just mountains, lakes, horses and the quiet generosity of a people who welcome you as if you had come from a nearby valley.

When to go

The ideal window to discover Kyrgyzstan opens from June to September, when the high mountain passes are passable and the nomadic yurts are installed on the jailoos. July and August are the peak months: Song-Kul and Issyk-Kul are alive, high-altitude hikes are in full swing and temperatures in Bishkek fluctuate between 20 and 33°C. It is also the busiest period for tourists, which is still very relative on the scale of Kyrgyzstan.

June and September are the months for travellers looking for fewer people and just as much beauty: the valleys are bright green in June, the forests of Ala-Archa turn gold and red in October. May marks the reopening of the passes, but Song-Kul remains inaccessible until mid-June. Winter (November-March) is reserved for ski enthusiasts in Karakol and travellers who are not afraid of the cold or isolation.

How much does it cost

Kyrgyzstan is one of the most accessible destinations in Central Asia. Daily life is cheap: a meal in a local café costs €3 to €6, a night in a yurt with a meal at a local's home (CBT Community Based Tourism network) between €15 and €30 per person, a Bishkek-Karakol marshrutka (6 hours drive) about €5. Count €30 to €60 per day all-inclusive for a trip in autonomous mode.

The main item of expenditure remains transport: no direct flights from Paris, connections via Istanbul, Dubai or Almaty cost between €420 (low season) and €750 (high season). Organized tours with yurt accommodation, guide and 4x4 for remote areas start at around €850 per person for 8-10 days excluding flight.

Where to go

Kyrgyzstan can be explored along two main axes: the North (Bishkek, Issyk-Kul, Karakol, Song-Kul), which concentrates the country's great classics, and the South (Osh, Ferghana Valley), which is part of the Silk Road and requires either a domestic flight or a long road or track.

The North: Lakes and Mountains

Bishkek, the capital, is the natural entry point. It is dedicated to a day for the markets and the history museum before heading to Ala-Archa, the national park 40 km from the city, for a first incursion into the Tian Shan. Lake Issyk-Kul, the second largest mountain lake in the world, then extends for 180 km between two ranges of snow-capped peaks. Karakol, at its eastern end, is the starting point for the wildest hikes.

Song-Kul, the high-altitude lake at 3,016 m, is the highlight of the show: no concrete roads, yurts as far as the eye can see, horses grazing on the edge of a huge lake under a sky that the altitude seems to make wider. The Barskoon gorge, on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul, offers a spectacular excursion with its waterfalls and views of the glaciers.

The South: The Silk Road

Osh, more than 3,000 years old, is a city apart in this mountain landscape. Its Jayma Bazaar, one of the largest open-air markets in Central Asia, and the sacred Suleiman-Too Mountain (UNESCO World Heritage Site) are well worth a visit. It is naturally associated with visits to Uzbekistan (Samarkand, Bukhara) or Tajikistan.

BichkekTour start

Bichkek

1-2 days

The Kyrgyz capital is disconcerting with its assumed Soviet side: wide avenues lined with poplars, shady parks and brutalist architecture rub shoulders with the first snow-capped foothills of the Tian Shan that can be seen on the horizon on a clear day. More of a transit city than a destination in itself, Bishkek is still worth a day for its lively markets, its ethnography museums and its restaurants where Kyrgyz cuisine (plov, manti, beshbarmak) unfolds its generous flavors.

The second largest mountain lake in the world after Titicaca, the Issyk-Kul ("hot lake" in Kyrgyz) never freezes despite its altitude of 1,607 m, surrounded by peaks exceeding 4,000 m. Its deep blue waters are 180 km long, bordered by sandy beaches and small Soviet seaside resorts revisited. In summer, Kyrgyz and tourists come to swim in its slightly saline waters, sometimes turquoise, sometimes indigo depending on the light.

Karakol

2-3 days

A must-see base town for hikers, Karakol stretches at the eastern end of Lake Issyk-Kul, within reach of glaciers and the Tian Shan passes. Its Sunday market attracts Kyrgyz and Uyghur herders in a ballet of horses, carpets and spices that has not changed in decades. In winter, the nearby ski resort offers powder descents in a wild setting for a ridiculous budget.

1-2 days

At an altitude of 3,016 m, Lake Song-Kul is the beating heart of Kyrgyz nomadism. In summer, families set up their yurts on the high-altitude meadows (jailoos) and graze their herds in a silence broken only by the wind. Spending a night in a yurt on the shores of the lake, under a starry sky of rare density, is often cited as the most memorable experience of a stay in Kyrgyzstan. Access via the passes (open from mid-June to the end of September) is itself part of the trip.

Only 40 km from Bishkek, the Ala-Archa National Park plunges the visitor into another world: glacial torrents, golden spruce forests in autumn, vertiginous rock faces and hanging glaciers. It is the favourite playground of Kyrgyz mountaineers and the reference excursion from the capital, accessible by day for hikers and experienced climbers aiming for the Semienov-Tian-Shansky peak (4,895 m).

The Barskoon gorge, on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul, is one of the most spectacular in the country: the river rushes down impressive waterfalls before emerging into the emerald green lake. The road that climbs to the Sary-Jaz plateau and the Kumtor gold mine offers breathtaking panoramas of the Tian Shan glaciers. It is also the territory of yaks and eagles, far from the marked routes.

Kyrgyzstan's second largest city and the capital of the South, Osh is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia, inhabited for more than 3,000 years on the Silk Road axis. The Jayma Bazaar, one of the largest open-air markets in Central Asia, spreads spices, textiles, dried fruits and handicrafts over hundreds of meters in a multilingual hubbub. Practical advice

Formalities

French nationals do not need a visa to enter Kyrgyzstan (exemption up to 60 days, valid passport). Official source: diplomatie.gouv.fr. No prior procedure, no e-visa to complete. The land border crossing with Tajikistan (Batken) should be avoided due to the recurring tensions since 2021-2022; find out about the news before planning a visit.

Getting around

Between the big cities, marshrutkas (shared minibuses) are efficient and cheap. To reach remote areas (Song-Kul, Barskoon Gorge, high-altitude passes), it is essential to rent a 4x4 with driver (€50-80 per day). The CBT (Community Based Tourism) network, present in all major cities, coordinates yurt accommodation, hiking guides and horse rentals at fair rates for host families. It is the best entry point to travel responsibly.

The main roads are in good condition between Bishkek and Karakol. The tracks to Song-Kul and some passes require a vehicle with good ground clearance. In winter, many roads are closed or impassable without special equipment.

Culture and uses

Kyrgyzstan is a Muslim-majority country but has a deep-rooted nomadic culture, making it a rather open and relaxed society compared to some of its neighbors. The Kyrgyz language (Turkic language) and Russian are both official. In rural areas, Russian is often more useful than English. A few words of Kyrgyz are very popular: "Rakhmat" (thank you), "Kandaisiz?" (how are you?), "Jakshi" (good).

At the home of a local in a yurt, respect the customs: enter by taking off your shoes, do not refuse the tea or kumys (fermented mare's milk) offered as a welcome, avoid turning your back on the elderly. Tipping is not an obligation but is welcome for nomadic families (5-10% of the nightly rate).

In Osh, a more conservative city, clothing covering the shoulders and knees is advised when visiting religious sites. Photography is generally well accepted but always ask permission before photographing people.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a visa to go to Kyrgyzstan if you are French?

No. French nationals are exempt from visa requirements to enter Kyrgyzstan for up to 60 days. All you need is a valid passport (6 months of validity recommended). No prior procedure is necessary, neither online nor at the embassy. Source: diplomatie.gouv.fr.

When to go to Kyrgyzstan: what is the best season?

The ideal season is from June to September: pleasant temperatures (20-33°C in Bishkek), open mountain passes, nomadic yurts in place on the jailoos (mountain pastures). July-August are the peak months for Song-Kul and high-altitude hiking. May and September offer fewer people and very green landscapes. Winter (November-March) is reserved for skiing in Karanol; mountain roads are cut off.

What is the budget for a tour in Kyrgyzstan?

Kyrgyzstan is one of the cheapest destinations in Central Asia. Count 30 to 60 € per day all inclusive (accommodation in a yurt or guesthouse, local meals, marshrutka or taxi travel). A night in a yurt with meal costs between 15 and 30 € per person. An 8-10 day organized tour starts at around 850 € per person excluding flights. Paris-Bishkek flights (with stopovers, often via Istanbul, Almaty or Dubai) are negotiated between 420 € (low season) and 750 € (high season).

https://www.evaneos.fr/kirghizstan/https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Bishkek
Is Kyrgyzstan a dangerous country for tourists?

Kyrgyzstan is generally safe for tourists in the usual hiking areas (Issyk-Kul, Song-Kul, Ala-Archa, Karakol). The Quai d'Orsay classifies most of the country in "Normal Vigilance", with increased vigilance for the border with Tajikistan (Batken Oblast), an area of recurring tension since 2021. Bishkek is a safe city, the common risks remain theft and scams in transport. When hiking, the risks associated with the high mountains (altitude, changing weather) are the most serious.

https://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/conseils-aux-voyageurs/conseils-par-pays-destination/kirghizistan/
How to get around Kyrgyzstan without a rental car?

Marshrutkas (shared minibuses) are the most used means of transport between the cities: Bishkek-Karakol (6 hours, approx. €5), Bishkek-Osh (12 hours, approx. €10). For remote sites (Song-Kul, Barskoon Gorge), you have to rent a 4x4 with driver (€50-80 per day) or join an organized hiking group. Local tour operators (CBT Community Based Tourism) offer very affordable turnkey tours with integrated yurt accommodation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishkekhttps://www.evaneos.fr/kirghizstan/
Do I need vaccines to go to Kyrgyzstan?

No vaccinations are required to enter Kyrgyzstan. The recommended vaccinations are: up-to-date DTP, hepatitis A (water and food), hepatitis B, typhoid. In case of hiking in remote areas, vaccination against rabies is recommended (stray dog bites possible at altitude). There is no risk of malaria in Kyrgyzstan. Altitude sickness is the main concern in Song-Kul (3,016 m) and Karakol.

How long does the flight from Paris to Bishkek take?

There are no direct flights between Paris and Bishkek. The most frequent connections are via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines, 7-8:30 a.m. in total), Dubai (Emirates/flydubai, 8-9 a.m.), Moscow (Aeroflot, 8 a.m.) or Almaty (Air Astana, 9-10 a.m.). Turkish Airlines is usually the best option in terms of fares and frequencies. There are also flights to Osh (OSS), useful for a North-South tour.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishkekhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osh_International_Airport
What is a night in a yurt in Kyrgyzstan?

The yurt (bozo-uy in Kyrgyz) is the traditional round tent of Central Asian nomads. In Kyrgyzstan, families set up their yurts on jailoos (mountain pastures) at altitude from June to September. Sleeping with locals in a yurt means sharing the family meal (shurpa soup, lamb meat, homemade bread, mare's milk tea), sleeping on thick carpets and waking up in the middle of the herds. The CBT (Community Based Tourism) network coordinates these accommodations to ensure direct remuneration for families (€15 to €30 per night with meals). Song-Kul is the most popular site, but the surroundings of Lake Issyk-Kul also offer many opportunities.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Song_K%C3%B6lhttps://www.evaneos.fr/kirghizstan/
What currency to use in Kyrgyzstan?

The currency is the Kyrgyz som (KGS). €1 is worth about 95 KGS (September 2026, source XE.com). The som is difficult to find outside the country: change your euros on arrival in Bishkek (Manas airport or exchange offices in town, better rate). ATMs are available in Bishkek, Karakol and Osh, but almost absent in rural areas and on jailoos. Bring enough cash in som before you go to altitude.

https://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/convert/?Amount=1&From=EUR&To=KGS
Can you do Kyrgyzstan with children?

Kyrgyzstan is a rather demanding destination for families with young children (difficult roads, altitude, limited comfort in a yurt). It is well suited for children aged 8 and over, for whom nights in a yurt, horseback riding and meeting nomadic families are often founding memories. The shores of Lake Issyk-Kul offer accessible beaches and a more comfortable infrastructure. Avoid overly technical routes in the high mountains with children.
