Why Ecuador

There are countries that keep impossible promises. Ecuador is one of them. In a territory the size of the United Kingdom, it stacks four distinct worlds: Andean highlands punctuated by snow-capped volcanoes, a primary Amazon still intact, a Pacific coast bathed in cold currents, and offshore, the Galapagos, the most extraordinary wildlife sanctuary on the planet. Here, biodiversity is not a marketing argument: it is a reality that we touch with our fingers every day, at every stage.

Quito, one of the most beautiful capitals in Latin America, sets the tone from the moment you arrive. Nestled at 2,850 meters between the arms of the Pichincha, its baroque colonial center is classified by UNESCO, its cobbled streets climb to vertiginous belvederes, and its surrounding volcanoes form a horizon unlike anything else. A two-hour drive away, Otavalo and its titanic Kichwa market. Further south, the Route of the Volcanoes passes by like a movie credits: Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, Tungurahua, each more impressive than the last.

Ecuador appeals to discerning travelers because it doesn't dilute the experience. The distances are short, the contrasts are violent (in a good way), and the Galapagos offers what few places on Earth can promise: animals that look you in the eye without fear, as if man were just a polite visitor to their territory.

When to go

The great constant of Ecuador is mildness: in Quito, temperatures fluctuate between 9 and 20°C all year round thanks to the altitude. There is no cold season or heat wave. What changes is the rain.

The Andean dry season (June to September) is the most favorable time for tours on the highlands. The volcanoes are clear, the paths passable, the air clear. July and August are the most touristic (and expensive) months. The month of June is ideal: fewer people, and the festival of Inti Raymi transforms Otavalo into a live show.

The wet season (December to May) is more difficult for high-altitude hikes, but it corresponds to the peak season of the Galapagos: the warmer waters attract more marine species and the vegetation of the islands is lush. The Amazon, on the other hand, is accessible all year round, with rainfall being an integral part of the experience.

For a tour combining the Andes and the Galapagos, the June-September window offers the best compromise.

How much does it cost

Ecuador has been using the U.S. dollar since 2000, which simplifies budget management for European travelers. The cost of living is significantly lower than in France: an almuerzo (full lunch with soup, main course, drink) costs $3 to $5 in a local restaurant, an interprovincial bus $1 to $2 an hour, a night in a clean hostel $15 to $25.

For an Andean tour without the Galapagos, count 35 to 75 € per day all inclusive depending on the level of comfort. The Galápagos represent a budget in its own right: a 7-night cruise starts at about $1,500 per person, an à la carte stay on Santa Cruz (hotel + excursions) costs $800-1,200 for 6 days. A domestic flight from Quito to Galápagos costs about $250 round trip.

A 10-day organized tour of mainland Ecuador starts at €1,200 per person (excluding flight). The 15-day Andes + Galapagos combination is offered by French tour operators from €3,500 excluding flight.

Where to go

From the Andean north to the Pacific port, Ecuador offers eight unmissable stages that make up a logical and coherent circuit, without ever repeating itself.

Quitois the natural starting point: its historic colonial centre is one of the best preserved in Latin America, and its altitude immediately sets the tone for this vertical journey. Two hours away,Otavaloand its colossal kichwa market absorb half a day or a full night, depending on whether you want to see Saturday morning (big market) or participate in the life of the village.

Descending to the south, theRoute of the Volcanoesstretches over 200 km of snow-capped giants: theCotopaxiand the Quilotoa Lagoon are the two highlights.Baños de Agua Santa, at the foot of Tungurahua, is the capital of adventure: waterfalls, cycling, rafting, thermal baths. Further south,Cuencaimposes the colonial break: its blue earthenware domes and cobbled streets make it the most attractive city in Ecuador after Quito.

L'Ecuadorian Amazon(Tena and Napo region) can be reached in 5 hours from Quito by a spectacular road that descends the Andean foothills: the lodges in primary forest, the pirogues and the indigenous communities offer a radical counterpoint to the Andean circuits.

Finally, theGalapagos: the archipelago is worth it (flight, entrance tax, budget) but in return offers a unique wildlife experience in the world.Guayaquil, an air hub to the islands, is worth a day trip with its renovated Malecón.

Practical advice

Formalities

French nationals do not need a visa to enter Ecuador for up to 90 days. A valid passport (6 months recommended after the date of return) is sufficient. Bring a return ticket and proof of funds at customs control.

Recommended vaccines:Up-to-date DTP, hepatitis A, typhoid. Yellow fever is mandatory if you arrive from Peru, Colombia, Brazil or Bolivia (stay of more than 10 days). An antimalarial drug is recommended for any stay in the Amazon or in low-lying rural areas. Consult an international vaccination centre before departure.

Security (2026):Ecuador is classified as "Enhanced Vigilance" by the Quai d'Orsay. A state of exception has been active since June 2026 in several provinces. Consolidated tourist areas (historic center of Quito, Cuenca, Andean highlands, Galapagos) remain safe for organized travelers. Guayaquil: limit nightlife and outlying neighborhoods. Register on the Ariane register of French diplomacy before departure.

Getting around

Interprovincial buses are the main means of transportation: reliable, comfortable, cheap ($1-2 per hour). Quito-Cuenca costs about $12 for 9 hours. In Quito and Guayaquil, the Indriver and Cabify apps are safer than taxis hailed on the street.

Car rental ($35-60/day) is relevant to explore the Route of the Volcanoes at your own pace. The national roads are in good condition; bring a 4x4 for the mountain tracks.

For Galapagos: domestic flight from Quito (via Guayaquil) with Aerogal or LATAM, approximately $250 roundtrip. Entrance fee of $200 per adult, payable at the airport. Inter-island transfers are by speed boat ($20-35 each way).

Culture and uses

Ecuador is a country with a strong indigenous identity: nearly 7% of the population is Kichwa, and markets, festivals, and costumes are a testament to a vibrant culture. In indigenous communities, ask permission before photographing people.

Spanish is the official language; a few words are enough to open many doors. Tips are not mandatory but appreciated: 10% in restaurants, $1-2 per day for guides.

Altitude is the main health issue: arrive in Quito without an intensive program on the first day, hydrate well, avoid alcohol for the first 24 hours. Altitude sickness (soroche) is treated with ibuprofen and rest; the local pharmacopoeia also offers coca mate.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a visa to go to Ecuador when you are French?

No. French nationals are exempt from visa requirements to enter Ecuador for up to 90 days, upon presentation of a passport (valid for 6 months after the recommended return date). No prior steps are necessary. Bring a return ticket and proof of sufficient funds at the entry control.

When to go to Ecuador: when is the best time?

The Andean dry season (June to September) is ideal for tours on the highlands: open volcanoes, mild temperatures (9-20°C in Quito), minimum rainfall (20-70 mm/month). The high tourist season (July-August) also corresponds to the French school holidays. The wet season (January-May) is more conducive to the Galapagos for marine fauna. Ecuador can be visited all year round, as temperatures in Quito are remarkably stable (9-20°C in all seasons) thanks to the altitude.

What budget should I plan for a tour in Ecuador?

Expect to pay between €35 and €75 per day for all-inclusive accommodation (accommodation, meals, travel, admissions) outside Galápagos. A full meal (almuerzo) at a local restaurant costs $3-5. Galápagos is a budget of its own: a 7-night cruise starts at $1,500-$2,000 per person; a hotel stay on Santa Cruz Island + excursions costs $800-1,200 per week. A 15-day combo tour Ecuador mainland + Galápagos starts at around €3,500 per person all-inclusive from Europe.

Is Ecuador dangerous for tourists in 2026?

Ecuador is on "heightened vigilance" according to the Quai d'Orsay. A state of emergency was declared in June 2026 in several provinces (Pichincha, Guayas, Esmeraldas) due to the rise in crime linked to drug trafficking. The consolidated tourist areas (historic center of Quito, Cuenca, Andean highlands, Galapagos) remain frequented without major incident by organized travelers. Guayaquil: limit night outs. Avoid the Colombian and Peruvian borders. Register on Ariane before departure.

What vaccines are needed to travel to Ecuador?

No vaccination is required at the entrance, except for yellow fever if you arrive from an endemic country (Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia) after a stay of at least 10 days. The recommended vaccines are: up-to-date DTP, hepatitis A, typhoid, and hepatitis B depending on your exposure. For a stay in the Amazon or in a low-lying rural area, antimalarial prophylaxis is recommended. Consult an international vaccination center before departure.

What is the currency in Ecuador and how do I pay?

Ecuador has been using the US dollar (USD) since 2000: no exchange rate to expect if you come from a euro country, you simply exchange EUR for USD. €1 is worth about $1.08 (August 2026). Credit cards are accepted in mid- and upper-range hotels and restaurants. Cash is still essential in markets, local transport and rural areas. ATMs are available in all cities but rare in the Galapagos: take cash with you.

How long does the flight from Paris to Quito take?

There is no direct flight from Paris to Quito. The total travel time is 11 to 14 hours depending on the stopover (Madrid with Iberia, Amsterdam with KLM, Bogotá with Avianca or Air France). Return fares range from €550 (low season) to €950 (summer, school holidays). Guayaquil (GYE) is an alternative if you combine with Galapagos: the domestic flights Quito-Galápagos and Guayaquil-Galápagos are operated by Aerogal and LATAM.

https://latinexcursions.com/galapagos-flights-airports/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Joaqu%C3%ADn_de_Olmedo_International_Airport
Can you visit the Galapagos independently?

Yes, but with constraints. Access is regulated: a $200 head tax (adults, decree 2024) is mandatory at the airport. Two options coexist: the naturalist cruise (4 to 14 days, access to uninhabited islands, certified guide mandatory) and the à la carte stay on Santa Cruz or San Cristóbal with day trips. The cruise offers more fauna diversity; the stay on the island is more flexible and cheaper. Book several months in advance during the high season.

https://gogalapagos.com/blog/ecuador-travel-requirements-2026https://latinexcursions.com/galapagos-flights-airports/
How to get around Ecuador between cities?

Interprovincial buses are reliable, comfortable, and cheap ($1-2/hour ride). Quito-Cuenca costs about $12 for a 9-hour drive. Taxis between cities are negotiable; Indriver and Cabify apps work in Quito and Guayaquil. Car rental (from $35/day) is useful for exploring the highlands at your own pace, including the Volcano Route. For the Galapagos, inter-island transfers are by speed boat or plane.

https://communityadventures-ec.com/how-much-does-a-trip-to-ecuador-cost-2026-budget-guide/
How many days does it take to visit Ecuador?

A minimum of 10 days is recommended for a classic Andean tour (Quito, volcanoes, Baños, Cuenca, Otavalo). Add 5 to 7 days for the Galapagos, which gives an ideal stay of 15 days. Three weeks allow you to integrate the Amazon or combine with the north of Peru. Unlike other South American destinations, Ecuador is compact (small area): the distances are short, which limits travel fatigue.
